The Cairngorms Adventure
Mountain bike tour Cairngorms Itinerary
The flow of your mountain bike tour Cairngorms has been designed to become progressively more technical throughout the course of the week. Your guides will talk you through each new challenge so that you make the most of your biking experience in Scotland and go home a more technically skilled mountain biker.
- +Arrival in Scotland - refresh + prepare for your adventure
If you’re travelling a long way or across several time zones to Scotland, we recommend arriving a day or two early to allow your body to adjust and to make sure any flight or luggage delays don’t spoil your trip.
- +Day 1 - Group meet-up + warm-up ride in Rothiemurchus
Your guide will meet you in Inverness around 12 noon (exact pick-up details will be specified two weeks prior to your trip) and we’ll head to H+I Adventures HQ to build and tune bikes and go through our welcome briefing over a light lunch, coffee and cake. We’ll start as we mean to go on!Once everyone is happy with their bikes we’ll make our way south to Aviemore for our first ride of your mountain bike tour Cairngorms. We’ll warm up our legs riding through the forests of Rothiemurchus, described by acclaimed naturalist Sir David Attenborough as “One of the glories of wild Scotland”.
The Rothiemurchus Estate is home to a great diversity of eco-systems and wildlife habitat, as well as some excellent singletrack. This first ride will introduce you to Highland singletrack – nothing too technical, just really enjoyable trails to get you in the mood. We will have a chance to look at some skills to set you up for the week ahead.
You’ll be staying in a lovely, welcoming guest house in Aviemore, the adventure capital of the Highlands, and after sampling some beers from the local brewery we’ll walk just a few of minutes to one of our local favourites by the riverside for dinner.
Distance cycled: 10km (app. 2 hours)
Accommodation: Guest house in Aviemore
- +Day 2 - Ancient forests of Glenmore
Setting off from our accommodation, we head into the Cairngorms proper, and one of the largest surviving areas of ancient Caledonian pine forest in Europe. Covering an area of over 30 square kilometres, this forest is steeped in history and folklore.Weaving our way through 300-year-old Scots pine, our ride starts to head off-the-beaten-track into the lesser-known singletrack that flows through the forest at the foot of the iconic northern corries of the Cairngorm massif.
We’ll pop out in the small hamlet of Glenmore where we’ll have some lunch and refuel, then it’s time to get back in the saddle. After a short climb we will descend a great piece of singletrack built for the national cross country championships, which has been left to change over time into the natural, fast and flowing trail it is today.
Heading up and over the Rocky Road we get views looking across the Eastern Cairngorms and, with one more flowing descent, we spin back to Aviemore, passing Highland cattle and red deer, making it back in time for some of the finer tastes of this area at a fantastic, family run restaurant in a nearby village.
Distance cycled: 35km (app. 5 hours)
Accommodation: Guest house in Aviemore
Meals included: Breakfast
- +Day 3 - Backcountry of the Southern Cairngorms
One of the most beautiful, dramatic and lesser-travelled areas of the Cairngorms is Glen Feshie. This wide open glen could easily be mistaken for a set from Jurassic Park and this is where we start to get a real taste of wilderness. Our ride starts with a short transfer into lush forest, home to endangered animals from Capercaillie to Pine Marten, which slowly opens up towards the River Feshie.
Skirting along the river on double track and singletrack we ride further into the glen itself, and then the adventure really starts! Be prepared for wet feet as we cross the river and head up above the old hunting lodges.
We arrive at a gorgeous piece of singletrack flowing through the high forest and into the moorland. Let off the brakes before the final sweeping corners below, and if you can manage to look up from the trail the view across the moors is often littered with herds of wild deer.
Still buzzing from the descent we start to work our way across to the hillside opposite, passing old crofts and abandoned black houses left from the Highland Clearances.
Back on singletrack we climb a short but punchy trail to the top of the hillside for a short breath catcher. From here is the cherry on top of the icing of today’s ride! Below is a local favourite – super-fast and flowy it’s impossible not to have fun on the well earned last descent.
It’s been a big ride today, but we don’t have far to go to our cosy dinner spot for this evening. It’s a different kind of place – but the chef uses only local ingredients, and combined with great chef skills, we know you won’t go hungry! Weather permitting, we can sit outside with a cold drink while we enjoy our wonderful Scottish fare.
Distance cycled: 30km (app. 5 hours)
Accommodation: Guest house in Aviemore
Meals included: Breakfast
- +Day 4 - The Glacial Plateau of Glen Feshie
Today we head back into the depths of Glen Feshie. This time we’ll aim high, heading up onto the the dramatic mountain plateau from where we will see yesterday’s ride. After a solid climb, we will be firmly in the middle of the glacial landscape. We’ll have a break to take in the incredible landscape around us, before setting off on our 9km descent! Our trail begins by tracing a ridge line with views down into hidden valleys and lochs left over from the ice age, then as we gain momentum the trail plummets from the mountain top and begins to weave between the heather and ancient pines, before finishing on pristine singletrack leading all the way back to the valley floor.
We’ll have a quick freshen up back at the accommodation before heading a local market town a short drive away to great pub. Always filled with locals, you know that’s a good sign! (The local gin and whisky menu is pretty good too!)
Distance cycled: 20km (app. 5hours)
Accommodation: Guest house in Aviemore
Meals included: Breakfast
- +Day 5 - Ballater + Royal Deeside
Today it’s time to see a different face of the Cairngorms. We’ll head towards the Eastern side of Cairngorm (1.5 hour drive) to Royal Deeside, home to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Highland residence. We’ll stop at the village of Ballater, which is steeped in history and surrounded by some of the best riding in the Cairngorms.
Crossing the River Dee, famous for its spring water and believed to have healing properties, we’ll begin the long climb up and out of the village. Gaining height quickly we’ll be treated to views over Lochnagar, made famous by the poet Lord Byron, and almost all the way out to the North Sea.
We’ll have a rest in a shepherd’s hut to re-fuel and take some photos, then follow singletrack all the way along the ridge high above Ballater. Our goal is a phenomenal trail known as “Heartbreak Ridge”. This seemingly endless trails dances across the moors before turning into grippy slab rolls and rocky corners, then drops into the trees and opens up into a fast swooping trail across the vibrant green blanket of moss.
It’s been a long, but rewarding day, and we’ll head into Ballater town for a well-earned meal at a very photo-worthy restaurant, before driving back to Aviemore for a hot shower and a good night’s rest!
Distance cycled: 16 – 30km (app. 3 – 6 hours depending on routes ridden)
Accommodation: Guest house in Aviemore
Meals included: Breakfast- +Day 6 - The Northern Corries
After a few days riding in the shadow of Cairngorm Mountain, it’s time to start getting high up on it.Riding straight from our accommodation along the Alt Mòr Burn (a mountain stream), we slowly climb from dense Caledonian pine forest, up onto the open mountain – a mix of beautiful mountain scape and dramatic weather, this is Britain’s only Arctic environment.
If we’re lucky we will pass the wild reindeer herd that lives on Cairngorm. Two bulls and five cows were brought to the Cairngorms by Mikel Utsi in 1952, and the unique climate provided an ideal environment for them. So much so that the herd is now over 150 strong!
From here we’ll head up and through Cairngorm Ski Resort, before traversing over a ridge line to find a historic and hidden path, leading us to the base of the imposing Northern Corries.
From this mountain bowl, a technical and challenging trail weaves its way back to the base of our climb. You’ll use all the skills that you’ve picked up through the week to navigate and flow through the boulders, mountain streams and open rocky trail, all with a view spanning a seemingly never-ending vista of ancient forest and mountains.
It’s been a big day today, so our dinner spot is just a 5 minute walk from our guest house, and we can tuck in to some great food and enjoy a beer or two from the local brewery.
Distance cycled: 35km (app. 6 hours)
Accommodation: Guest house in Aviemore
Meals included: Breakfast
- +Day 7 - Last Dance in the Pines
After the now infamous Scottish breakfast, we have one more trail we’ve been keeping up our sleeves. Pedalling up into the pine forest to just above tree line, from our view point we’ll have the week’s adventure laid out before us.After looking over many of the areas our wheels have passed through during the week, we open the suspension and drop saddles one last time. This trail is all about maximum fun, darting between the trees and floating over roots and mini rock gardens.
This trail is crowned as one of the best pieces of singletrack in the area, and as the corners and pines flash by, it’s impossible to finish without a smile.
It’s the perfect way to wrap up our Cairngorms Adventure before heading back to Inverness and sadly packing bikes away.
We’ll have our final celebratory meal in our favourite restaurant on the banks of the River Ness, and toast an incredible week on our mountain bike tour Cairngorms, in Scotland.
Distance cycled: 20km – 30km (app. 2 – 4 hours)

Mountain bike tour Cairngorms reviews

This was my fourth trip with H+I and I loved every minute of it. What set this trip apart for me was the terrain and clinics we would do each day. Our riding was through a landscape of roots, sticky granite, mud and the occasional water crossing. And our guide would do short clinics around particular features throughout the day to help us with body positioning, our approach lines and speed. This enabled all of us to improve throughout the week and build confidence as the days got more challenging. Mark Clark is an extraordinarily talented guide. His attentiveness, mad skills on the trail, patience with clients and knowledge of history make him the complete package of leadership excellence!
My second trip with H&I and it won’t be the last. Simply outstanding, from the initial conversations and organisation with Victoria to the expert guiding of Mark and Donald, quite simply, a fantastic 7 days. World class trails with great food, great banter, and a few beers thrown in and to top it off, even the sun came out.
My son and I had a memorable week in the Caringorms with guides Mark and Donald and a fantastic group of fellow cyclists. We had a cohesive and friendly group, and a remarkable stretch of weather, which also helped. The riding was challenging enough to keep us interested but also plenty fun. Mark and Donald's helpful coaching made riding trails (which where more technical than I expected but very doable) a joy. Every day was a different type of riding, and every night a different and interesting eating experience. And I don't want to leave out Victoria who patiently and efficiently coached us through a 2 year delay due to COVID and a last minute substitution of my son for my wife- not to mention travel delays. Thanks to all for a remarkable week!
Wow. What an incredible trip in the wild of the Cairngorms. This was my first H+I trip and as a solo rider. From the get go, Victoria was super helpful in answering all my questions and ensuring I was comfortable prior to travelling. And Mark, our guide, was just great. Tons of riding experience and a true local who always had an interesting story to tell. The whole experience was so well run and thought-through. Can't wait to get on my next adventure with H+I!
My dad and I had discussed a trip such as this for many years. We finally decided to do it and I can't believe how fortunate we were to find H+I. This trip did everything we wanted it to. The Cairngorms are an incredible slice of the world and I can't wait to go back. Our guide, Mark, was inspiring, helpful, knowledgable, and passionate. Victoria in the main office answered every question I had before, during, and after the trip. The level of professionalism is absolutely remarkable. All the hard stuff was taken care of so that all we had to do was get up in the morning, eat a great Scottish breakfast, ride our bikes, have some more amazing food (and whiskey, of course!) and then get to sleep in order to do it all over again.
Now I have to find more time and money to do another one!
Had a fantastic adventure with my son.
Victoria was incredibly attentive and helpful with answers to our questions prior to starting our tour and worked behind the scenes smoothing things out when the unexpected arose during the tour.
And our guide Mark made this trip much more than I imagined it would be. His encouragement and advice while in the saddle made everyone a better rider but beyond his expert skills as a guide and instructor his willingness to share his personal stories of growing up and being Scottish made this trip unique. Beyond the trails and scenery it’s the comradely and laughter he created that I’ll never forget.
Consummate professionals. Our guides, Bear and Max, know bikes, trails, service, the art of guiding, and, most importantly, how to have a great time. It was our first guided MTB tour and, thanks to the entire H+I team, it definitely won’t be our last. Thanks for showing our group such a great time....We loved every mile of it!
Chris is a gifted guide and leader of people. You forget you are being guided at all...always a good sign. He is constantly one step ahead...knows when to push the group and when to back off. Together, he and Max delivered a sensational week of epic riding in Scotland for us. Loved it. I would recommend this well-run outfit every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
I have been on many bike tours in the last 10 years both here and abroad. Seven trips have been with H+I and they are just the best!
Chris, our guide, was good at working out everything, from the skills of his riding group to the best places to ride to enjoy epic scenery in the best weather available. Along with awesome riding we visited interesting places including a distillery and a cooperage.
The accommodation was superb with a full Scottish breakfast to start the day. Evening meals were at carefully chosen places known for their good food often locally sourced.
Chris made sure that everyone’s bike was safe to go every day and was expert at doing on the spot repairs when needed.
H+I have a great team who really take care of their guests and they know all the best trails. I shall join them again.
There are more trails in this world than you can ever hope to ride, but this H+I trip was impressive in every sense a worth the time. The skills coaching and local knowledge from our guide, Chris made this trip much more than just a ride. The local history was fascinating, the variety of trails (and associated challenges) was way beyond my expectations, and I learned a lot about all aspects of riding.
The day after my week with H+I and I ran into an individual who had come to the Highlands with some friends to ride on their own. I spoke with him for about 15 minutes, comparing trips, and I can tell you his experience was a fraction of mine. He left Aviemore exhausted, I left Aviemore invigorated.
I had such a fantastic week biking in the epic Cairngorms. Agne and I have done many mtb tours and this was one of the very best ever that we have done! Chris is a truly great guide who showed us some amazing trails in the wonderful forests, glens and high mountain wilderness. He also has a canny knack of reading the weather and choosing the best window for the trails. Chris is a great mechanic and was up early each morning to make sure our bikes were trail ready. Thanks for all the tips and advice.
A big shout too for Max who joined us on a couple of days - great company and upcoming guide - and to Victoria for all her help with organising the tour for us. Thanks for a truly memorable experience. Really looking forward to doing another tour with H+I before too long.
I love to mountain bike and I love to travel so I knew this would be fun. But it was so much more than that! I can't say I had a lot of specific expectations but I can say my mind was blown by this amazing experience. Chris, our guide, and Victoria in the office, took care of us like family. If I didn't have to work for a living, I may never have come home! The food was amazing (totally unexpected), the tempo of the trip and the riding enjoyable and relaxed yet wild and adventurous, and the lodging was fantastic.
We are already talking about what trip to take next. I wholeheartedly trust this company to give a wonderful experience in any part of the world. Thank you!
Knowing how good H+I is, I came to this trip with high expectations, but they were easily exceeded! From meticulously planned details (hotels, restaurants, etc.) to the excellent rental bikes that we were riding, everything was great. But of course the star of the show was our guide Chris Gibbs - a patient & attentive instructor on the trail (and a truly inspiring great biker), life of the party in the evening during our group dinners and a wealth of knowledge on all things Scottish! He expertly chose our trails factoring in our experience/skill levels, weather, plus on top of that every day we saw something new and beautiful (and different from MTB point of view). Great, big thank you to Chris and everyone at H+I for this perfect trip! I am definitely planning to come back and to more destinations with this company.
This was my first mountain biking trip and first time with H+I. From the get-go I was super impressed with the planning, coordination, and responsiveness from the H+I team. Victoria and Catherine were incredibly helpful and welcoming as we were getting set up for the trip.
The Cairngorms have an almost otherworldly beauty. I've never experienced anything quite like it. Weather may seem to be a concern, but I think it added to the adventure in a positive way--"character and team-building" as Chris would say 🙂
My husband and I started mountain biking regularly a few years ago and thought we knew what we were doing...turns out we were wrong. Within a week Chris completely transformed our confidence and technical skills on the bike! Aside from the technical aspect, Chris himself is above-and-beyond what I expected from even an expert guide. He is experienced and well-versed in biking, mountaineering, and outdoor safety/survival. He clearly has a passion for the area and sharing it with others. Most notably, his ability to read and adapt to both the individual and group dynamic is very impressive. Chris even stayed up nearly all night at the airport with my husband to help us track down lost luggage with all our gear (which we got thanks to his persistence with the locals). While we took hot showers after long rides in the evening and slept in late in the morning, Chris was out there cleaning and fine-tuning our bikes for the next day ride. This behind-the-scenes effort was certainly recognized and much-appreciated.
For us, the highlight of the trip was sliding tires, kicking up dirt, and sharing stories and good laughs with the group--all with the Cairngorms as our spectacular backdrop.
Can you tell I have a severe case of holiday blues? Already looking forward to our next trip with H+I next year. Thank you H+I team!
XOXO -Marianna
P.S. - I have to give a shout-out to Max as well, he's the bombdiggity 🙂
This was my first MTB trip and it was so worth it.
First of all the advice and recommendations from Victoria were great and really helpful when your travelling alone for the first time.
Our guide Chris was more than awesome. He was kind, humble and knowledgeable. He takes his time explaining the hard technical parts of the trail and how you should ride them. At the end of the week you will be a better rider.
That was probably the best week that I ever had and I'm already looking forward for another one.
Sign up for a mountain bike tour with this company! After researching companies and reading reviews I decided on the Cairngorms, Scotland adventure and this company. I traveled here solo and recommend them for anyone else who is looking for a guided mountain bike adventure. They provided excellent bikes, service, guides, and accommodations.
Victoria from the office was fantastic and helpful in offering advice and recommendations for my planning of sightseeing excursions beforehand around Scotland. They even let me courier items to the office I didn't have room for to carry before starting my adventure. Thank you!
I had Chris Gibbs for a guide. He was excellent in explaining the trails (technical bits), choosing the trails to ride, maintaining our bikes and was a fun guide who had exceptional knowledge of weather patterns and trails to make the most out of our time riding in Scotland.
I had a fantastic time and plan on using them for my next adventure.
This was my first mountain biking trip and thus first time with H+I, plus first time to Scotland. What a trip! It was absolutely wonderful.
First, the people - Chris Gibbs was an incredibly thoughtful, detail oriented, and encouraging guide on the bikes as well as during our time in town/out-and-about. He covered all facets of each day (weather, bike logistics, people logistics, etc.) with ease and humor. I learned much from him. Plus, everyone else I had contact with at H+I – Kevin, Victoria, Catherine, and Donald were all equally kind and generous with their time and help. Quite an excellent team!
Second, the riding. The week was well structured for ramping up distance and technical level. I was challenged up to the edge of my comfort zone, but never felt pressured and was always encouraged to make smart decisions on harder terrain. This, balanced with the coaching from Chris and encouragement from the group, made me a better rider. It was eye-opening to ride bigger and more mountainous terrain than the more cross-country style I typically ride. The scenery was outstanding – everything I anticipated (and more!) from a bike trip in the Scottish Highlands.
Third – off the bike and around the area. This was an integral part of the experience. Having a guide local to the area was key for better learning the ins and outs of the culture. This, along with H+I’s relationships with so many great local establishments (excellent food+bevvies!) made me feel at home in the Aviemore area.
I cannot express enough my gratitude for this experience and everyone at H+I that made it so remarkable. Already thinking about the next one…
This was my second guided mtb trip and first with H+I. We had fantastic weather, rode in some spectacular places, had a friendly and enthusiastic group, ate delicious meals, and had the best imaginable guide in Chris Gibbs. Knowledgeable, skilled, friendly, and a great teacher/coach/mentor. Highly recommended.
This was my first trip with H+I. The riding was excellent and different than what I am used to, coming from California. Wet, rocky, muddy and boggy. Emphasis on Boggy! Kevin was an excellent guide and taught me to climb rocks like a beast. He is very knowledgeable and was able to read the group very well. The scenery was beautiful.
The food....incredible. I was apprehensive at first, but all of the restaurants were worth the trip. Very hip and traditional selections were made on the style of food.
Accommodations were very comfortable and high end.
Loved Scotland and H+I- hire bikes are worth the price and well taken care of. Highlight- Whiskey at just the right time.
Looking forward to another trip-
This was my first trip with H+I and my first time mountain biking the Cairngorm area.
The highlights begin with the people. Chris Gibbs was a terrific host, guide and coach. The group was intense ... we all wanted to be pushed to our limit, but chill … we all wanted to enjoy the beauty and the total experience of the Cairngorms. And, the people of Scotland are the most genuinely friendly people that I've ever met.
Of course the riding was excellent. Some of the most technical stuff I've ever ridden. Very thankful for the coaching, pointers and extremely capable Yeti rental bike.
I had an absolute blast. I am definitely planning to go on future trips with H+I.
This was our second bespoke Cairngorms trip, and it was every bit as exciting and memorable as the first: expert, sensitive guiding by Kevin Henderson and Ella Wright; awesome scenery; varied, fun (and sometimes a bit scary) trails in parts we hadn't seen before; and to top it off, rekindling H+I friendships, adding kids and friends into the mix.
Once again, Catherine and Euan put together a perfect adventure for us, and we’re already looking forward to the next one.
Our third trip to the Cairngorms reuniting the Harkey and Myers/Cohen families with our favorite guide Kevin Henderson, new guide, Ella Wright, and a cameo appearance by Chris Gibbs was, as always, a delight. Scotland's scenery never ceases to amaze. Kevin and Ella's knowledge of the terrain and description of each upcoming section of trail, as well as technical tips added to our enjoyment and readiness for what was to come. We rode some old familiar trails and lots of new ones. The greatest adventure was descending from Heartbreak Ridge in thunderstorms and torrential rain - it's amazing how quickly you can ride when you have to!!
H+I Adventures is simply one of the very best - from accommodations, restaurant selections, bike rentals, amazing trails, whisky nips and top notch guides - I cannot recommend them highly enough. It looks like Highlander IV is already in the works!!!
Highly recommend! Went on Scotland Cairngorm trip and had a great time. Even broke my arm and still had a good time! Accommodations were great, meals delicious, and our guide, Kevin, awesome!
I was impressed with the care and attention and help they provided during a medical emergency. Comforting to know that if something happens, they will take care of you.
This was my first tour with H+I Adventures touring the Cairngorms in Scotland. I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this tour including venue, accommodations and the culinary scene.
Kevin our tour guide is very experience bike rider but more importantly he is a great at analyzing other people’s riding techniques and making recommendations or adjustments to your riding style to make the journey even that much more enjoyable.
I have been riding for many years self-taught but just the advice and recommendations alone was worth the price of admission. I would even consider doing this tour again but they have many other treks that I most definitely be joining in the future,
Well done H+I Team
This was my second time taking this tour. The landscape and riding are so amazing I am considering returning next summer for round 3. My goal on this trip was to improve my technical skills while having a great time. Kevin was an amazing guide that spent time with each person focused on their individual riding ability to help them progress. Kevin was also a master of coordinating the group so even though the group consisted of different ability levels everyone was able to have the challenge they were looking for. Everyone on the tour improved their riding and had a great time. Scotland did it’s part by providing rain every day. The weather did nothing to hamper our spirits. We all packed the stuff listed on the recommended list and were covered. An unexpected perk was Kevin leveraged this weather to help us improve our wet conditions riding. As a side note, the rocks in this area are super sticky even when wet.
The accommodations were amazing. Each morning started with a great breakfast at the accommodations and then we had an amazing dinners at H+I selected restaurants that never disappointed us. Kevin has an interesting past that was interesting to learn about and he helped facilitate great conversations within the group. I think these people will be friends for life.
The mothership for H+I are also great to work with. They have all the boxes checked before you arrive and the trip runs flawlessly. They are very responsive and provide great advice on how to enhance your trip with pre and post tour activities.
I will be riding with H+I again this September and I am now looking at trips for 2020.
What a fantastic week in the Cairngorms, riding a variety of hidden gems and some tried and tested trails all under the excellent guiding of Kevin. Can’t praise him highly enough for his patience and knowledge, I felt I’ve come on as a rider thanks to some of his great tips. Staying in comfortable accommodation and starting each day with a great breakfast, even the trying wet conditions couldn’t dampen the mood of the group.
Each day just more and more fantastic scenery, the mist providing the perfect backdrop. All in all a great experience from H+I.
Only difficult thing is deciding which one to book next...
Had an amazing week in tropical Scotland. Apparently is sometimes rains in Scotland, but all we saw was sunshine and beautiful trails, wild scenery, nice restaurants and a great B&B. Our guide Remi is a verry relaxed, fun and knowledgeful guy. We couldn't stop him from cleaning and oiling our bikes.
Glad we could experience this all. Thanks you guys!
Really excellent trip! The riding and scenery in Scotland is amazing and thanks to the guiding highly varied as well.
The planning, organization and guiding worked perfectly. Highly recommended!
A huge thanks to H+I for organising this amazing MTB trip for our small group of 4. We absolutely loved it all!! As if the spectacular scenery and nature wasn't enough we were blessed with perfect blue skies for almost the entire week. Our guide Jono did an outstanding job, always attentive, willing to teach and share his home turf with us. Not only is Jono a great guide and rider, he is also a really pleasant guy to be around, thank you Jono, we will most definitely try to return and ride with you again some day.
A truly spectacular trip, made all the better by Jono's consummate professionalism, patience, and expertise. A fantastic trip if you're looking to explore some of the Highlands, build your mountain biking skills, and enjoy great food and whiskey, too!
Organization and execution by the H+I team very smooth, despite a record heat wave!
This was a perfect trip, which exceeded my expectations – by a long way! I’d done two previous trips with H+I – in Nepal and the Coast to Coast. Both were big adventures and both were utterly amazing.
This was a different kind of trip. It was based in a single centre, it promised gradual skills development, and it marked a step down in grade. I had lower expectations, but needn’t have worried – it was a great trip.
Aviemore proved to be a good base. It’s a small town with a good outdoor vibe and is at the heart of a system of easy trails that lead through ancient woodlands to the surrounding forests.
The forests were great – full of ancient trees, heather, the occasional deer and secret single track. These trails were the focus of our holiday. They are, for the most part, created by local riders and flow beautifully through the terrain, most with interesting technical features, all offering great riding.
Jono, our guide, was superb, offering great company, knowledge about the area, wisdom and patience. If one of our group balked at a feature, he took it in his stride, carefully broke down the problem, and let us session it. Group confidence and skill increased as the week progressed.
We stayed in a very comfortable Bed & breakfast in the middle of Aviemore and dined in some very good restaurants in the surrounding villages – the evenings were always very relaxed and a real pleasure.
The trip provided a perfect introduction to Scottish riding culminating in a high mountain ridge ride, with water bars, rocky features, a hike-a-bike section and great descents, a great introduction to the kind of riding that you find on the Coast to Coast. The trip would provide good preparation for the Coast to Coast, with good technical features but in less challenging environments. I, however, enjoyed it as a holiday in its own right and, as ever, with H+I, it was perfectly organised.
What a spectacular week of riding in the Scottish Highlands. A variety of terrain with some challenging single-track, flow trails and the obligatory hike-a-bike day. Throughout the week we were spoilt by views of the snow capped Cairngorms.
Special thanks to the amazing Cairngorms, the place where we haven't seen any rain during the week. Special thanks for Jono who supports and endures our presence 🙂 Special thanks to Scotland for the gorgeous lanscapes, splendide nature and incredible single tracks.
And special thanks for H+I for this perfect organisation.
A challenging week of spectacular riding in the beautiful part of the world. Skills development as the week went on was progressive and constantly reinforced. Jono is a consummate teacher, coach and motivator.
This was kind of a bucket list trip for me. I lived in Scotland back when I was very young and have wanted to go back ever since. I finally booked it and headed out. I knew I really made the right decision on our 3rd or 4th day when we dropped out of the woods into a field of heather that seemed to go on for ever. We crossed a stream and came upon 2 abandoned stone buildings. It framed the perfect picture with a few riders in the background. That was exactly why I felt this trip was perfect for me.
Jono couldn't have been a more perfect guide for this trip. Humor, stories, knowledge, encouragement, you name it. Never a dull moment with him at our helm!
Our stay at Ravenscraig B&B also couldn't have been better. Rooms just the right type for our visit. Great breakfast and the staff was so amazing. My group was an amazing mix of people from all over. So much fun and laughter on our trip. I would only hope everyone has such a great group.
The one thing that really surprised me was the quality of the places we had dinner at. All the little villages. Boat Of Garten, Carrbridge, Grantown On Spey, Aviemore and more I'm sure I'm forgetting. I spent the following week between Edinburgh and Glasgow and no where we ate could come to close to the quality we had during our trip.
And all rest of the folks at H+I were so great. Can't say enough about how the minute we all met up and started the week it felt right at home.
If you're undecided still, do it! You won't be disappointed!
I truly enjoyed the Cairngorms with a great group of riders and guides, offered all of the "bits and pieces" (Jono) and exceeded my expectations. H+I's attention to detailed planning with room for flexibility given daily weather and rider constraints resulted in an enjoyable, but challenging tour.
The mid-August timing offered beautiful vistas of heather filled valleys as well as; rocks, roots, and mud! Also, the Scottish dining renaissance (local chefs focused on farm to table cuisine) in recent years resulted in fantastic evening gatherings at great venues.
Kudos to H+I, and especially our guide Jono!
We had a great group to ride and have fun with for the whole week, including our 70's-haired local guide Jono. Different trails, views and restaurants every day, each day unique and memorable in its own way.
Jono had a nice way of adjusting the daily routes due to weather and our abilities/preferences, including some skills training. Relaxed and aggressive!
Definitely have to get back to Scotland, thanks Jono & Cat & H+I. Yetis rock.
Great trails, amazing views, lots of fun. Jono helped me a lot with my riding so also learnt a lot during the trip. Everything was very well organised. Pure riding fun.
My trip through the Cairngorms was not only epic but totally awe inspiring. This trip had great ascents and some definite leg burning climbs, but every climb was worth it for the glorious views and excellent descents.
Every day I had a smile on my face from how rad this adventure was. I learned a lot about the area while we rode and also become a better mountain biker in the process.
Our guide Jono was so knowledgeable and cool - he really made this trip outstanding. I can't wait to go back and ride more trails in this beautiful land!
H+I put on a great trip. We had to play a couple things by ear due to the weather by group consensus. Jono was a fantastic guide and teacher. His experience and love for mountain biking shines as well as his local area knowledge.
I'm not a fan of road riding and there was a little more on this trip than I would have preferred, however the single track trails accessed by these road rides were worth it.
I have returned a better rider, putting what Jono taught me into practice.
We had a great trip
Our guide Jono was excellent, funny, motivating, patient, and expert at his craft. He repaired cuts and flat tires quickly.
This was my first guided mt bike tour and H+I did not disappoint.
Every detail was considered. Each day was a perfect blend of flow and tech trails, amazing food and plenty of cake to keep our engines humming.
BIG thanks to our remarkable guide Chris who challenged me to push beyond my perceived limitations. I’m a better rider for it! No one does Scottish style adventure like H+I.
Nothing but praise for H+I and our guide Chris! Everything was flawlessly planned from the transport, the rides, the lodging, and the dinners (great food even for a vegetarian). I will definitely be returning to do another trip with H+I!
We had yet another amazing experience with the H+I team. Chris was an excellent guide, coach, skills enhancer, entertainer, and just all around "Ambassador Extraordinare" on our trip. We can honestly say we both left better riders than when we arrived. The H+I team makes everything about the trip brilliantly seamless and stress free.
The Cairngorms is a beautiful area of the Scottish Highlands that we are happy we were able to visit, enjoy the excellent food, and meet some wonderful people.
We will definitely be returning for another H+I adventure in the future. We just have to decide which one should be our next😊
Thank you all again for a great adventure, we will be talking about this for years to come!
Our Cairngorms adventure came about as an alternative to the incredible looking Coast to Coast tour. Someday I will likely do that tour, but Cairngorms seemed like a good introduction to Scotland riding and H+I Adventures. I'll admit that I had a bit of trepidation about whether the rides would be challenging enough, but there were plenty of opportunities to test myself and I quite enjoyed the trip. If you're a die-hard that simply must ride advanced terrain every minute of every day, you'll be disappointed. But if you're up for variety, adventure, quite a lot of intermediate terrain, and some significant technical challenges, this is your tour.
Jono was an excellent guide. He was thoughtful in his route preparation, entertaining in the van, on the bike, and at dinner. I learned much about his thoughts on bike handling, and left a better rider than I arrived.
I would happily recommend this tour to a wide range of riders.
It’s nearly impossible for me to fully state how great my adventure was in the Cairngorms with the H+I team and our guides. From the highest quality attitudes, skills, training, caring and attention to detail, all the way through to the accommodations and beyond. Catherine, Euan and the H+I team are total pros. They are uncompromising in the quality of what they do and how they do it. They are caring, fun, funny, kind and eager to please. They listen and they pay attention. They take safety seriously and they don’t cut corners.
The biking was huge, even epic, in so many ways. Some of the days were long and sometimes terrifically challenging but I kept smiling throughout. Much of that happiness had to do with the terrifically supportive attitudes of our guides, Jono and Jacques. Jono in particular is one of the most impressive characters I’ve had the pleasure of riding with and also getting to know. A total class act with a big heart (and lungs to match!). And Jacques is just a terrifically kind, gentle, encouraging person with an ability to take on technical descents with skill and confidence that is sheer joy to watch.
One of the things that really set this trip apart for me were the evening meals. We all went out together with our guides every night and spent quality time talking, getting to know each other, listening to each other’s fantastic stories and having a LOT of laughs. It really helped drive the cohesiveness and positive vibe of our group and, therefore, the willing and enthusiastic support we gave to each other particularly on those long days of tough riding. I can’t quite describe it fully but it certainly made it easy to look forward to the next day even if we knew it would be super challenging along with the occassional shitty weather. 😉
I could go on but here’s something telling: A good buddy who wasn’t on the ride asked me if I’d do the Cairngorms again in spite of all the trials, difficulties, weather, some pretty tough and uncompromising trails and even taking a few tumbles. I surprised myself by immediately saying “Yes, I would!” But only with H+I Adventures.
I will do another H+I trip, no doubt in my mind. I can’t imagine doing another guided mountain biking trip with any company other than H+I. Top notch, best-in-class, reasonably priced, and just ridiculously nice people who I now consider genuine friends. It’s a no brainer.
This holiday was absolutely brilliant. Our guides Jono and Jacques did a great job. In addition to their excellent general guiding and organizational skills, both were really good guys. I was very satisfied with the support in the office provided by Catherine. Thanks again for a great holiday in the Highlands. Awesome.
Incredible, Inspiring, Magical, Uplifting, Life Changing........I could go on and on about the attention to detail and the love and professionalism that the H+I Adventures staff and mountain guides pour into each and every tour they offer but instead take my word for it and pick the adventure and location that suits you and your group so you can start to truly live for today instead of always finding a reason to not chase your passion and experience what the great sport of Mountain Biking has to offer.
My Guide "Jono" instilled Safety, Confidence, Respect , Team work and Fun factor into each and every mile we rode in the Scottish highlands. Thanks again Catherine for everything you and your team do and I look forward to my future trips with H+I !!!!!
Using a bicycle to explore these new, and beautiful, places with our excellent guide made for the experience of a lifetime. Not only did we get expose to great trail, places, and sights, but we got such a real feel for the area. We left with new friends, improved skills, enhanced knowledge, and memories of an adventure that will last forever. We would strongly recommend this to others! Thank you so much to the H&I team for showing us such a great time!
Our entire mountain biking adventure was amazing! From the very beginning all the way through the last night in Inverness! Our entire group arrived as good friends who mountain bike together, but all with different abilities and expectations. Our hosts and guides were knowledgeable, caring and fun, showing us all the amazing landscape the Cairgorms has to offer. Our guides were not just guides: they quickly became our coaches, therapists, friends and cheerleaders, giving us all confidence and skills to push through and believe in ourselves and our technical abilities! We will do another trip soon and add additional friends to join us! We have all become family through this great experience!
Great adventure--the H&I team (Euan, Catherine, John, Chris and Jono) are top notch and completely focused on making sure that we had a tremendous adventure. Arrangements were top notch, the flexibility in the trails and the focus on teaching and helping me through the tougher spots made this one of the best adventure trips that I have gone on. The whisky helped as well.
I have alot of road biking experience but relatively little mountain biking experience, so I was definitely concerned about what trails we would be doing. We certainly got lucky that the trails were relatively dry, and our guide took us on trails that were challenging but at my level; I was actually surprised at the things I was able to do by the end of the trip.
Euan did a great job making the trip fun for everyone and assessing riding levels. He also threw in an extra day of riding which was great.
This was my third holiday with Euan and, as usual, it was amazing. To be specific, it was well organized, flexibly arranged, and great fun. Euan knows the area like the back of his hand and could come up with riding, touring, eating and drinking options on the fly to suit the capabilities and interests of the people in the group. He even fixed my bike and pushed me up a hill when I took a wee tumble! Now that's service. I'll continue to use H&I Adventures and will recommend them to anyone who will listen. Great company, excellent trip, and worth every drop of sweat!
This is a long overdue note to say what a wonderful time we had with Euan in the Cairngorms National Park. Not only was the scenery spectacular, but it was such a special way to see the countryside. The planning and support throughout the trip were fantastic and we couldn't reccomend it more highly!
A brilliant holiday! The trips out were amazing with beautiful scenery and challenging routes. Being in a small group was ideal as we all got a chance to get to know each other. Also meant that the holiday could be tweaked so it suited everyone. I would definately recommend this holiday... for the cycling, the beautiful Cairngorms and the holiday itself which felt personal and very relaxed. Thank you Euan and Catherine, I had an amazing time... and to Kev who arrived day one when the real work had been sorted but more than made up for it with his cooking!! I hope to get the chance to join you again...
The Cairngorms Adventure was the perfect blend of breath-taking scenery, amazing singletrack, delicious meals, and new friendships. It's ideal if you're looking for exciting mountain biking, but also want to explore a bit of Scotland too.
We wanted a trip which wasn't going to be too difficult for one of us, but challenging enough for the other. Euan was great in answering questions about this trip and assuring us this trip would "fit the bill". The trails were great, giving us a varied experience through out the week. Along with the great rides, we thoroughly enjoyed the evenings, spending time with the other riders and guides. H&I Adventures is definitely a first class operation!
