We recommend arriving in Whitehorse a day or two early to allow your body to adjust to local time and to make sure any flight or luggage days don’t spoil your trip.
We have a handy guide to spending 24 hours in Whitehorse with recommended accommodation and things to do in your spare time in the city.
Today we’ll welcome you to the wild, mountainous territory of the Yukon and kick start our adventure together.
After a morning to take in the sights and enjoy a bite of lunch in Whitehorse, your guide will collect you from your hotel at 1pm. Once gathered together we’ll transfer to our mountain ranch and home base for the week, around 30 minutes’ drive away. En route your guide will help orientate you and point out some of the highlights of this once rough and tough pioneer town.
Upon arrival we’ll have time to build bikes and settle in, before our opening ceremony and introduction to the week ahead. Together with Singletracks to Success and members of the local First Nations, we’ll acknowledge the land we’re riding on and set the scene for an amazing adventure together.
With the BBQ sizzling and music playing, we’ll give our bikes any final tweaks and fuel up for our first warm up ride. On what will be the longest day of the year, this evening ride will start at 10:30pm and take in easy forested pathways to a nearby lake.
What better way to start your week in the land of the midnight sun!
This morning you’ll wake up with the sounds of the forest and views of the mountains. After breakfast we’ll make up packed lunches and get set for your first full ride in the Yukon.
We will guide you through the Grey Mountain trail network on a cross-country day that has a flair towards gravity assisted mountain biking and smooth, flowing singletrack that makes for the perfect way to kick start the week. Expect to pedal, laugh, and have the adrenalin pumping all day! This is what world-class singletrack mountain biking is all about.
Your guide will pick the perfect location for our home-made packed lunch, about half way through the ride. Spectacular views of the Whitehorse valley and the coastal mountains near Carcross accompany us throughout the ride, and any technical climbs are immediately rewarded with awesome downhills.
With bikes fully dialled in and legs officially stretched, we’ll head to one of our favourite local craft breweries to reward ourselves with a cold one and cheers to a great day on the trails.
Upon returning to the lodge and once showered, we’ll gather together for a dinner of local flavours and delights. This evening we have a special short film screening that will leave you feeling inspired and even more motivated for what’s to come!
After breakfast together we’ll once again pack up our lunch and head out for another epic day of riding. Today we drive to the vibrant village of Carcross to ride the lower Montana Mountain trail network.
This mountain has undergone a transformation from a silver mining hot spot in bygone years, to a mountain biking paradise that is pioneering in new ways! Funded through the local Carcross Tagish First Nation, the Singletrack for Success program hires local youth to create mountain biking trails for the betterment of the community.
Set in some of Canada’s most beautiful scenery, these professionally built trails snake their way down the mountain and finish at the edge of Bennett Lake. After sampling the finest trails of the network, we’ll take the opportunity to down bikes and pick up the trail tools to give back. We’ll meet with the local trail crew and with their direction help work on the trail.
After a few hours of collective effort, we’ll reward ourselves with dinner in Carcross where you will have the opportunity to soak in the relaxed atmosphere and impressive First Nations artworks.
After dinner, we’ll return to our wilderness lodge for more beer, lawn games and music as we celebrate another great day in the Yukon.
This morning we have a different type of ride in store! Following in the paddle strokes of the pioneers that adventured down the Yukon River in search of their fortune, we’ll ride what used to be the White Horse Rapids! These formidable rapids have since been calmed by the introduction of a dam, although the history of the gold rush era still live on to be discovered.
We’ll split into two groups and switch our bikes for huge voyageur canoes, each holding up to 13 paddlers. As we float down the river your local guide will bring to life stories of past pioneers and adventurers.
Once we have reached Whitehorse, we’ll pull out of the river and fuel ourselves for an afternoon back on two wheels. This afternoon’s ride will lead us to our own fortune of stunning singletrack trails!
We will shuttle up into the alpine of Mount McIntyre and admire the views of the Whitehorse valley and towards Fish Lake. We can even see all the way to Lake Laberge, the lake made famous in the Robert Service poem The Cremation of Sam McGee.
As we start the descent, we will ride through different ecosystems, starting in the alpine right down to the valley floor.
Dinner this evening will be back at the lodge, where we’ll enjoy yet another group dinner of local produce.
Make sure you don’t hold back on breakfast this morning, you have a big day ahead of you! As we head back to the First Nation village of Carcross, we’ll adventure high into the alpine for outstanding 360 degree mountain views and a day like no other.
You’ll have a shuttle to take you a good way up the access road, but there is still some stiff climbing ahead before you can reap the rewards of the awesome descent to come. After lunch at the summit, we will explore the old wooden mining relics before we descend down the Mountain Hero Mine trail.
This trail follows the tram line that the historic mine created to get supplies up and down the mountain. This stupendous singletrack descent will have your braking fingers aching and have you laughing out loud as we reconvene at the side of Windy Arm Lake.
Please note: This trail, more than any other, is especially dependent on weather conditions. Your guide will check the conditions in the morning and make the decision as to whether you can go ahead with the ride, or leave it for another day.
After a big day in the saddle yesterday, this morning we’ll squeeze a bit more out of our legs before relaxing in the Yukon’s only hot springs.
This morning, we’ll head out for a ride on the lower trails of Mount McIntyre, commonly known as Mt. Mac. This area offers a variety of well-maintained trails suitable for all skill levels. We’ll begin at the skills park and enjoy a fun and flowy loop through the forest. Along the way, we’ll take in some beautiful views of Whitehorse and the surrounding landscape. While making our way back into Whitehorse, we will ride through parts of the 24 Hours of Light mountain bike race course.
With heavy legs and dust filled faces, this afternoon we will make our way to the Eclipse Nordic Hot Springs to soak our muscles in various pools. You’ll enjoy the luxurious rock pools containing natural hot spring water and have the opportunity to pass through the hot/cold/relax Nordic Cycle. There are also two steam rooms (one is scented with eucalyptus) and two saunas.
En route back to home base, we will stop off for dinner and drinks at our favourite pub that serves local dishes and handcrafted pizzas.
Today we will ride one of the absolute ‘must-do’ trails: the Yukon River Trail. The Yukon River is a highlight of any trip to Whitehorse, and riding alongside the bright green waters seems almost unreal.
We will ride pencil-thin singletrack and follow the Yukon River as it flows back to town. We will bike past the historical former town site of Canyon City, where Klondike stampeders created a makeshift canvas tent city while they figured out how to cross the rapids without losing all their gear. These same rapids were said to look like the manes of white horses, which is how the capital city of the Yukon received its name.
As we arrive back at the lodge you can wash and plunge into the hot tub while your hosts prepare another locally-sourced, home-cooked speciality and fetch you a glass of red wine or a chilled beer.
This evening is all about celebrating and enjoying the festivities with lawn games and fun challenges.
Sadly, this is the end of your fabulous mountain bike adventure in the Yukon.
After our final breakfast and delicious Midnight Sun coffee to go, your guide will transport you back to the airport at around 10:00am in time to catch your flight back to reality.
