ANCIENT PATHS OF THE PYRENEES: Tour Itinerary

Share itinerary

We’ve crafted this itinerary to offer the perfect mix of shuttle-assisted riding, pedalling, and hike-a-biking to get to the most insanely beautiful descents of the Spanish Pyrenees. It is an adventure and you will have to work hard for your rewards, but you’ll have the benefit of shuttles when you need them most.

You’ll be riding at over 2,000m / 6,000ft some of the time, so be prepared to pace yourself as you acclimatise to the altitude and surroundings. There is also exposure on some trails.

We advise arriving into Barcelona one day prior to the start of your tour, to allow for any delays to flights or luggage.

We recommend staying at Barcelona Airport Hotel which is where our driver will meet you on the morning of day 1.

Your driver will pick you up in the morning at the designated hotel at Barcelona airport and transfer you to Garos. The drive will be approximately four hours and will slowly take you deeper into the Spanish Pyrenees.

As you arrive in town, with its grey stone buildings clinging to the surrounding hillsides, your guide will be waiting to welcome you. Over lunch, your guide will go through the pre-trip briefing, then you’ll bike builds before taking your first shuttle to the warm up ride.

We’ll reach a high plateau surrounded by a ring of mountains and thundering waterfalls, buzzing with excitement for the week ahead. We’ll climb for another 30 minutes before taking a panoramic singletrack circling the mountain, through tunnels and eventually to an alpine plateau. From here we have five trails to choose from and your guide will pick the most appropriate and fun descent to take us back to the valley floor and our village.

After a refreshing post-ride beer we will go to our hotel for dinner and enjoy the mountain culture of the Val D’Aran region.

This morning we will be picked up by our local shuttle driver and taken further down the valley, close to the French border. From here we will embark on an adventure ride into France that will take us to our highest point of the day at 2200m after approximately 3 hours.

We’ll have lunch at the top accompanied by sensational views and the sound of the cows bells. If we are also lucky we will also be joined by some wild horses enjoying the cool mountain air and lush pastures.

Fuelled up and ready to go, we’ll start our descent back into Spain. A rustic walking path that descends while skirting the mountain, delivering us to the forest line, and some perfect enduro style trails. We then have a 45-minute climb up to the next trail head, which leads to another fabulous descent to the valley floor and our awaiting van.

Once the bikes are loaded we’ll shuttle to one of our favorite trails in the valley, Big Nuggets! It’s fun and flowing with multiple lines to choose from, it is a great finisher for what has been a big day in the Pyrenees.

As we return to the village to wash the bikes and have a cold beer, your guide will inform you about the lovely dinner tonight in one of his favourite restaurants.

After a lot of climbing yesterday, we’ll give our legs a bit of a break with more shuttling today.

We will set off from the hotel for a one hour shuttle to 2000m and a natural lake. This is the start of our natural descent punctuated by technical rock sections, mountain huts, inquisitive cows, and lush alpine meadows.

Meeting the van again, we’ll enjoy three more shuttles and descents today, taking us high above the village of Garos and dropping down a variety of trails to the valley floor. Each more fun than the last.

With brains fizzing from all the descending we’ll call it a day and have lunch in the local cafe, before washing bikes and enjoying a beer in the sunshine with the team.

We will return to our favourite local restaurant for dinner tonight, while still giving plenty of time for an early night to prepare for the next days ride.

Today we’re heading for the Banesque valley and a hotel situated on land that has been in the family for nearly 1000 years. It’s a home-from-home in the mediaeval village of Cerler.

In order to get there though we will need to shuttle to a height of 1500m. From here we are hiking and pushing the bikes to 2200m and our highest point in Sierra Negra. This will take approx. 2 hours, but once here you will see the North the Aneto Massif and the Maladeta, and not to mention your descent all the way down to your mountain village hotel, in the very picturesque village of Cerler.

As we arrive off the trail at the village we will walk our bikes to the square, where a small bar is tucked away into a hidden corner, we will grab some cold drinks and sit looking over the valley and back up to the mountain we just descended from.

We’ll check into our village hotel and freshen up ready for well-deserved dinner at the hotel restaurant.

As you wake to the sound of the birds high up here in the mountain village of Cerler and you make your way to the breakfast room, we will kick off the day with a coffee and some home made cake and jams, freshly squeezed orange juice and maybe another coffee. It’s a lazy start to the day after a long adventure ride the day before, and a shuttle day to preserve the legs for tomorrow.

We will leave the hotel and descend the remaining section of the trail we finished on the night before, ending in the valley to meet our shuttle driver. Once loaded up we will ride a selection of 3 descents over the course of the day. From high alpine trail to tight forest singletrack, to toboggan style trails that flank the fields in the lower parts of the valley.

As lunchtime approaches we will make our way to one of our favourite lunch stops at an eco- farm with great local style dishes, some not for the faint hearted, but something for everyone. After food and maybe a quick coffee we will hop back in the van for a short shuttle to the final trail of the day, and one to remember for a very long time

Dinner tonight is a short walk from the hotel through the narrow mediaeval streets to a cosy, warm and very inviting restaurant to spend a few hours reliving today’s fun and excitement.

It’s our last adventure day today, leaving a shuttle day for tomorrow, your final day in the Pyrenees. We will have a slightly slower morning today savouring the cooler mountain air with a coffee before heading lower within the Pyrenees to the Ainsa valley and the heat of the lower altitude.

En route we will shuttle up to 1400m where we will start our climb and hike-a-bike to 2100m to an impressive alpine ridge with 360 degree views that try to take your eye off the trail at every turn. Offering continuous stunning views and some of the most enjoyable trails of the week, this descent will leave you pinching yourself and wondering if this is what you have been searching for all of your mountain biking career.

As we flow out of the trail and meet the transfer, we will load up and drive to Ainsa to cool down with a refreshing drink and soak up the 1200 years old town.

Dinner this evening will be in our beautiful hotel in the heart of the MTB Kingdom Pyrenees.

Today is the final day in the Pyrenees and once again the terrain has changed, but the quality of trails and culture is just as strong as earlier in the week. As we have descended to the Ainsa valley the landscape is a lot dryer, dustier and littered with olive groves and fruit trees.

With the temperature rising and legs tired after a big week, we will shuttle today but, as always, you will still need to work. You’ll know by now we love adventure, not just ‘bike park laps…’

On our first lap we will ride to and then through the abandoned village of Morcat with its XI century church. This will lead us onto a long, rocky singletrack descent that will be punctuated with some technical sections.

We’ll then enjoy classic Pyrenean routes to places like the Bad Lands and Muro de Roda hilltop village before descending into the valley.

We will be stopping to have a packed lunch in the shade today, to allow us maximum time on the bike before returning to the hotel to wash and pack your bikes for the return journey home tomorrow.

After our late afternoon admin has been completed we will shower up and change for our celebratory dinner in Boltaña to toast an incredible adventure through the Pyrenees with friends new and old!
