Andalucía; A Sensory Adventure

Mountain bike tour Spain Itinerary

This mountain bike tour Spain will immerse you in the rich culture, cuisine and landscapes of Andalucía, from the ancient mule tracks of the high Alpujarra, to the fascinating history of Granada.

+Arrival in Spain - refresh + prepare for your adventure

If you’re travelling a long way or across several time zones to Spain then we recommend arriving a day or two early to allow your body to adjust and to make sure any flight or luggage days don’t spoil your trip.
+Day 1 - Group meet-up + welcome ride

Your guide will meet you at Málaga airport or, if you’ve arrived early, at your H+I recommended hotel in Málaga, around lunchtime (between 12:00 and 13:00) and transport you to Dilar, a village in the heart of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. When we arrive at your fabulous small hotel we’ll build bikes, allocate hire bikes, then get together for some tea, coffee and cake and our welcome tour briefing.

If time allows, we can head out for a short ride to stretch your legs and introduce you to the amazing Spanish trails.

This evening’s dinner will be a feast of delicious local food and wine in the hotel, which will immerse you immediately into the very sociable and relaxed way of life here, in the southern Spanish mountains.

Accommodation: Small hotel, Dilar

+Day 2 - Heading South: Dilar to Durcal

On your first full day on our mountain bike tour Spain, you will have a big day of riding, from last night’s accommodation and along the southern most portion of the Sierra Nevada mountains. During your ride you will experience the full compliment of what southern Spain has to offer: flowing singletrack, doubletrack, climbing and descending, and an optional technical descent to round things off (your guide will make the call on the group’s ability); not to mention amazing mountain cuisine, hospitality and views…

Your accommodation this evening is in another lovely family-run hotel, which will be a welcome sight after this big day in the saddle! We’ll get the bikes cleaned up, stowed away and grab a quick siesta, before enjoying a typical Spanish dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Distance cycled: 36km (app. 6 hours)
Accommodation: Small hotel, Durcal
Meals included: Breakfast

+Day 3 - Conchar to Padul

After a great breakfast we’ll shuttle 20 minutes from our accommodation before starting our ride. Then heading towards Albuñuelas Sierra, we will follow the “Gudaris” tracks, some singletrack trails hand made by prisoners of the civil war in the 1940’s. The trails are lovely and flowing in parts and in other sections you’ll need to keep your wits about you as it gets more rocky and technical, in the typical Andalucían style!

We’ll stop for a picnic lunch and admire the views over the Sierra as we re-charge our batteries and take plenty of photos.

With the Spanish sun warming our backs we’ll re-commence our ride through typical mediterranean agricultural landscapes of almond trees, vineyards and olive groves, which will then take us through some recovered forests of pine and holm oak trees.

This will drop us out onto the final stages of our route, on some of the trails used for the Mamut race, a very popular local mountain bike race.

Your accommodation is in a beautiful hotel in the heart of the village of Capileira and in the evening, if we’ve made good time on our ride, we’ll enjoy wandering around the village, doing a spot of shopping and having another fantastic dinner in a local restaurant.

Distance cycled: 56km (app. 8 hours)
Accommodation: Village hotel, Capileira
Meals included: Breakfast

+Day 4 - High Alpujarra + Trevelez

From Capileira we’ll venture even higher and deeper into the Sierra Nevada mountains. With a selection of breath-taking singletrack that leads us to the dizzying heights of 2000m, before dropping us down through high mountain meadows to lunch in the highest village on mainland Spain, Trevelez. This remote village is famous across Spain and the world for its ‘Jamones’. You’ll have the chance to visit the museum and small family factory and, of course, taste some of this delicious ham – a real highlight of the day.

After lunch we’ll climb out of the village on the GR-7 (mountain walking route) to a height of 1765m, where, on a good day, you can enjoy views as far as Morocco. Once you have your breath back we’ll set off on what will be more than 10km of descending, all the way to your hotel for the evening.

Your accommodation for the next two nights is quintessentially Andalucían: an organic farm where they grow their own olives, grapes, almonds, etc. You can take a walk around the hotel grounds to learn all about the ecosystem and where the food on your dinner plate has come from.

Distance cycled: 40km (app. 7 hours)
Accommodation: Organic farm stay, Cádiar
Meals included: Breakfast

+Day 5 - Pista de las Minas to Torvizcon or day off

Today you have the option of a day off to relax, explore the local village, read books… whatever you wish.

Alternatively, your guide will take you on a great four hour ride in the local area. You’ll climb to a height of 2000m, to the head of a trail that will lead onto the lovely flowing section from the previous afternoon. This will give you the chance to ride this fantastic trail again with the benefit of experience! Then you will peel off onto a new trail that weaves through mountain villages all the way down to 650m at the bottom of the valley.

On returning to your lovely farm stay accommodation, if you like, your hosts will take you around their olive and vine yards, before giving you a tastes of their exceptional home-grown produce.

Distance cycled: 32km (app. 6 hours)
Accommodation: Organic farm stay, Cádiar
Meals included: Breakfast

+Day 6 - Heading north: Cádiar to Alcudia (Guadix)

From the high snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains, where you were riding on trails that interlinked whitewashed villages, you are now going to cut across to the northern side and into the ‘desert land’.

We will start with a transfer of about an hour from our accommodation in Cádiar, followed by a full day on the bike that will have you wondering if you have landed in another country, or world! A large part of today will be doubletrack, punctuated by flowing singletrack sections.

As a result of the natural topography of this area, many people in this part of the Sierra Nevada built caves to keep warm in the winter and cool in the summer, thus effectively living underground. As you ride through this area you will see these structures and be in awe at how grand they can look.

It would certainly be remiss of us to bring you here and not stay in a cave! Tonight you will be sleeping in unique cave accommodation, and enjoying more mouth-watering local delicacies in your subterranean dining room!

Distance cycled: 30km (app. 4 hours)
Accommodation: Cuevas Tío Tobas, Guadix
Meals included: Breakfast

+Day 7 - Alcudia to Granada

After a fantastic night’s sleep in your comfortable cave, we’ll load up the van for a 30-minute transfer to the start of the trails. Today we’ll be riding an ancient trade path, that will be enough to give any singletrack addict their fix!

As you snake along singletrack-strewn hillsides, completely engrossed in these spectacular trails, you will suddenly be hit by a surreal view of the Alhambra in the distance, which signals the start of your descent into Granada, via a much less ventured path…

Your local guide will lead you through the old gypsy quarter, on to some old-school street riding through the Albaicín, down steps and onto cobbled alleys in the heart of the old town to your final hotel.

After much high-fiving and laughing we’ll drop our kit off before the best post-ride experience ever: a visit to the Hammam (Arab baths) for a soak in the warm pools, a massage and stretch out on the hot stone slabs. Utter bliss.

When you’re feeling refreshed from your pampering we’ll hit the town on a tapas tour of Granada city, where the good food, wine and chat will flow late into the early hours on your last night together on this amazing adventure around the Sierra Nevada of Spain.

Distance cycled: 35km (app. 5 hours)
Accommodation: Small hotel, Granada
Meals included: Breakfast

+Day 8 - Departure

Sadly, today we must bid our farewells. We’ll pack up all our belongings and transfer you (app. two hours) back to Málaga airport for your flight back to reality.

Meals included: Breakfast

1. You are entitled to free medical and hospital care
Having shown your European Health Card (EHC), you will be seen by a doctor at a local health centre or at your accommodation if you are unable to make the journey. If you need to see a specialist or go into hospital, the doctor will give you the relevant medical certificate or referral. Accident and Emergency services are available at hospitals.

2. You will require your European Health Card (EHC)
With the European Health Card you will receive the same temporary healthcare services as any other Spanish citizen. The expiry date can be found on the European Health Card and it is valid in EU countries, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.

If you forget your European Health Card (EHC)
You will have to pay any hospital, medical or pharmaceutical bills in advance, and then seek reimbursement from the relevant organisation in your country of origin, providing all receipts.

Some countries do not use the European Health Card yet. Other countries: Although you will receive medical attention in an emergency, this will be liable for payment. In any case, you should contact the relevant office in your country of origin for full details regarding current requirements to receive medical care in Spain.

It is wise to carry basic medicines such as paracetamol or aspirin for fever and pain and Pepto-Bismol for stomach upset.

You should always consult your own doctor or physician before travelling to new countries to seek their advice on matters concerning your health abroad.

Your health and safety is on tour our top priority so when you travel with us you also have the peace of mind knowing that you will be covered by Global Rescue emergency medical and evacuation services.

The currency in Spain is the Euro. Most international credit cards will be accepted in main towns, but for meal expenses etc. in smaller towns and villages it is advisable to carry cash.

Travellers’ cheques can be exchanged during banking hours, from Monday to Saturday 09:00 – 15:00.

We suggest a tip of 5% of the cost of your tour should be paid to your mountain bike guide at the end of the trip, which will then be divided between all drivers, support staff and fixers, if you feel you have had a good experience on your mountain bike tour Spain.

+Holiday insurance

You are required as a condition of booking to be insured against medical and personal accident risks. In this policy you must include cover for mountain biking and we recommend that you take out a policy which covers cancellation and baggage.

Best tour ever

Riding with friends and wonderful guides through the Sierra Nevada is the ultimate way to experience the landscape and culture.

The Spanish guide trio was simply in its own league. Proud of their beautiful region and culture and tasty food. I must go back some time.

fantastica Spain!

I joined the Andalucia Spain trip in Oct 2019 and it was fantastic! The riding alone was great but it was so much more than just a mountain bike trip.
it was a cultural immersion with history and stories shared along the way by the local guides. it was the local food and drink shared in the small villages through which we rode every day and in which stayed every night. it was the new friends made and camaraderie shared within the group and with the guides.
for sure, pay attention to the skill level of the trip and the packing list. much of the riding was technical/rocky and the weather was variable given the huge range of elevations covered - from sea level to 9000 ft.

More than I bargained for

There was a moment on this trip when I wanted to give up. I was frustrated and exhausted. When I look back, it's part of what makes me even happier that I did it. Kudos to our guides extraordinaire, Javier and Cali, who I also consider professional historians, engineers, comedians, food connoisseurs, psychologists, and friends. Biking amazing terrain is only a small piece of what you will take from your time in this unforgettable place. It's tough and it's worth it! If I can stay fit and improve my technical skills a bit, I'll be taking my son with me in a year or two 🙂

Great Experience

First of all, I would like to thank the guides Cali + Javi and their support team in making this a fun filled adventure. Along with the guiding the group through the trails they also provided good information about the region, its culture and its history, making it a well rounded experience.

The trails mapped out for the 6 days were unique and provided a new MTB terrain every day, from the loose rocky trails to the packed flowy trails, singletrack, double track, enjoyed them all. I must admit the hike a bike sections were challenging, but after that the fun of riding flowtastic trail was awesome!

Loved the week

The trails, the guides and the hospitality - all amazing! It was better than I expected. The technical uphills were particularly exciting for me. Flowtastic trail was a lot of fun and I think I improved my mountain biking skills. Thanks H+I for a well organized week and thank you to Javi, Cali and the support team.

Amazing trails

This trip was our first organized mountain biking trip and we are very pleased to have booked with H+I. Our local organizers and guides Cali and Javier were fantastic! The trails were challenging and fun; lots of different types of trails from sandy river beds to narrow trails on cliff edge to ancient Romain paths to very technical rocky and flowy.

The accommodation were very comfortable and unique. We were usually the only ones there! We were a small group and it was great to ride in a non-competitive, caring and fun atmosphere. We loved this trip.

Brilliant organisation

Andalusia October 2018 was a throughly enjoyable trip. Cali and Javier are wonderful guides who not only showed us their challenging local Mtb tracks but introduced us to the food, wine, history and colourful culture of Andalusia.

They brilliantly organised everything. I just rode, met some lovely people and took in the sights and delights.

Lovely to spend a week making no decisions other than where to put my front wheel. Well done H+I.

fantastic Spain adventure

Sierra Nevada snow covered mountain tops :I

We enjoyed an amazing week in Spain on fantastic trails with a lot of fun. The trails are super, sometimes flowy and sometimes rough. The scenery was beautiful and interesting every day. The guides make sure you are well nourished and enjoy the Spanish specialties - not only fish I have to say. There is a lot of other things to try. The places we stayed are great and unique, we loved it a lot. Great company of other guest as well on the tour.

Thanks to the H+I team, the guides Cali, Javi and Lali especially, for making this happening and taking care of us.

We will for sure ride again with H+I.

Such Variety

Spain, that looks like fun..

Sitting at Barcelona airport with a 6 hour delay to Malaga (on top of the 4 hour stop over and 31 hours travelling already) wondering what we have done organising a 7 day MTB trip with 12 days away from home (Australia). Well that was soon forgotten.

We were promptly picked up by Cali, Lali and Sergio with 6 on board already and 2 more to pick up making ten, 3 couples from the US and 4 blokes from Australia. Introductions done and names promptly disappearing from my mind the banter was plenty as we headed the 2 hours to our first stop to get the formalities out the way and organise the bikes. Cali, Javi, Lali and Sergio couldn’t have made us all feel any more welcome, they have such a passion for their region which they shared at every opportunity.

Nothing was too much trouble, the accommodation was great, the food, the stops and the variety in the riding, from technical options, flowing single track, old Roman roads and the bit I’ll never forget riding through the old towns.
Everything flowed like clockwork.

Thanks to Cali, Javi, Lali and Sergio for a well-planned seamless trip through the Serra Nevada’s, Andalucía, much more than I expected and to all our fellow adventures, you all took the trip to another level, it was fantastic to meet you all and no doubts we will ride together again.

Sitting at home thinking of the trip, so many memories, was it worth 4 days travel for 7 days riding; absolutely I’d do it again in a heartbeat!

The only thing I’m yet to work out is how can you ride for more than 6 hours most days and put on weight? Only in Spain, you’ll have to go to work out the answer.

Thanks to all in the H+I Team

I want to do it again!

I know there are many other great trips from H+I, but I want a full-on repeat of Spain. Can't help it. It was that good. The thrill of discovering new trails is not enough. I want the food, the guides, the food, the wine (oh my - the wine!), and of course the trails.

The week really could not be improved in any way. Cali, Javi, Lali and Sergio are pros. The week included different types of riding to suite all preferences - from fast and flowy to rocky and technical, with diverse ecosystems and gorgeous views at every turn. The accommodations were excellent and often unique, and sharing food every night allowed you to appreciate the country in a way which was every bit as good as the riding.

Cali, Javi, Lali and Sergio - thank you for showing us your country. Can't wait to return!

7th heaven!

This was our 7th tour with H+I Adventures.

We travelled around the globe with them and made so many great experiences while riding, getting to know new cultures and making a lot of new friends along the way.

"Spain will be just another one on the list," we thought, but it wasn't. It was way more. For us it was the perfect holiday and we didn't want it to end. The nature trails are so much fun and the guides did a great job not only showing us the way, but also with the knowledge of the area they shared with us. We were stunned by the diversity of landscapes we could explore being out for just one week on the bike. This holiday is the perfect combination of all the things we love. Thanks for making this happen.

Ahhhhh biking bliss

What an amazing week of experiencing Andalucia. I can't say enough about Cali, Javi, Lali, and Sergio. Cali and Javi weren't only fantastic riders but historically informative and fun too. Lali had us taken care of every morning with lunch and a session of yoga if you had the energy. Sergio didn't only drive us but gave us a free archeological session as well.

The route and planning were perfect. Super fun technical descents and amazing scenery. Riding from one white washed village to the next with a little urban downhill thrown in was a blast.

And then there was the food. Delicious isn't a strong enough word. If you want an authentic Spanish riding adventure look no further!

by Dan Hudson on Andalucía mountain bike tour Spain
The Perfect Trip?

For me at least, just might be. Riding is just about perfect with mile after mile of amazing tech-y natural singletrack often leading right to the accommodation so minimal use of the van for transfers. The food + drink in Andalucia is amazing.

Last but not least, cannot imagine a way the guides can improve - Cali and Javier are stellar ambassadors for the region who can also both lay it down. You will not regret choosing this trip.

by Nick M on Andalucía mountain bike tour Spain
Amazing Andalusia

The Andalusia trip is a must for all mountain bikers. The scenery is stunning, and the biking is first class...lots of adrenaline-fueled, technical descents; an abundance of manageable technical climbs, and amazing food each night to cap off the efforts of the day.

It goes without saying that the guides - Cali and Javi are superb...this is their home, and they know how to look after you. If you're fit, love some technical riding, and have an appetite - this trip is right up your alley

by Dick Honing on Andalucía mountain bike tour Spain
It's all about sharing ...

This was one of my best mountain bike trips ever! It was all about sharing ... sharing beautiful flowy and technical trails, sharing food, drinks and experiences... the key to a excellent trip as well as an enjoyable life. I’m sure we will meet again somewhere in Europe, Canada and/or the US and look forward to extending the experience we had in Andalusia.

Spain September 2017

What an amazing trip!

To be honest, at the beginning I was a wee bit petrified…! But I need not have worried. Our guides Cali and Javi were motivating, supportive and quick to recognise individual skill levels. The climbs were hard but rewarding, and the descents were so much fun, with everything thrown in from rocky technical pitches to flowtastic flowy singletrack and desert riding. And for added peace of mind, there was always an Opt Out if the legs were beat or the descents a little too gnarly (known affectionately by the team as the Cultural Tour!)

Accommodation was top notch, and the food and wine flowed as well as the single track. The support team, Lali and Sergio, were just as awesome so we didn’t need to worry about anything apart from our riding.

So a big thank you to H+I Adventures for putting together an incredible itinerary. I am already thinking about the next trip…hmmmm…Yukon or Croatia? Cant decide!!!

by Anders Lilienberg on Andalucía mountain bike tour Spain
Lots of everything

I have been riding in US, Nepal, Scotland and now Spain. Spain is close to MOAB in US. The trails on the Spain trip are fantastic and long (compare to trails in Sweden) and they are rideable most of the time. The landscape and the trails are variable from technical to flowy. To stop and have a break in a small village was also - so good! The guides - I liked them both, with lots of competens, knowledge and service. Thanks H+I for a very, very good trip.

WUNDERBAR

Ich habe diese Tour nun schon zum 2. Mal bei H&I gebucht.

Cali and Javi did a phenomenal job of guiding, entertaining, and providing insight about the local culture, geography, food, geology, everything. It was obvious that they were enjoying what they were doing and took great pride in showing us their trails.

Go bike Andalucía!

This trip is perfect for people looking to experience a mix of Spanish culture, fantastic food/drink, and of course, great mountain biking. The guides really make the trip special. They keep you entertained, introduce you to the Spanish way of life, and lead you up and down some little known Sierra Nevada mountain bike trails. This is a trip we will remember for the rest of our lives. Thanks H+I for all of the memories. We will be back for more!

Great challenge

Just got back from a week in Spain - a real epic week of mountain biking. Some hard days of climbing, but the descents were made all the sweeter because of it. Cali and Javi are exceptional guides, and made sure everything ran smoothly. Great fun, great company and a thoroughly enjoyable challenge.

Magnifique

Life is not the same after this introductory trip to Spain and H&I - far better in fact, and the next trip is already booked. If amazing trails, food, people and adventure are your ideal holiday, you're in luck.

Epic!

A sun-drenched week of the most spectacular, technical and fast-flowing singletracks of the Sierra Nevada - followed by a dip in the sea, drinks and some awesome Andalucian food! Outstanding!

Flowtastic!

Gave this trip 5 stars as 6 weren't an option. A spectacular week of sun, sea and singletrack. Big climbs, big views, big meals and big smiles all round. Highly recommended!

Sierra Nevada, Spain

Fantastic trails, from nice and flowy to technical and rocky with switch backs to die for. Beautiful scenery, sunny skys, amazing white mountain villages. Accommodation and food just supurb. An uplift service is provided but a fair amount of your own steam is required to access the trails however well worth the effort. Afterall this is a real mountain bike holiday, (no chair lifts). There was six in our group excluding the guide, just perfect for keeping everything moving along nicely. I can see myself returning time and time again. I'm heading back out with my mates early in the new year. I just can't wait.

Mountain bike adventure in Spain

Excellent riding with guides who know the terrain intimately, each day just got better and better with a good selection of ups and downs coupled with superb weather and good banter from a mix of riding collegues from the Surgeon who picked his lines with clincal precision to High Tower the Destroyer who tried very hard to re-shape the geology of the Spanish trails on his hard tail (respect).

From the excellent transfer from the airport and the good food provided, many thanks for catering for my special diet requirements, and excellent riding. I will be back in the spring.

  • Q. What style of mountain biking vacation is it?

This mountain bike tour Spain is a guided mountain biking tour, ideal for advanced mountain bikers. The distances we cover each day range from 30km to 50km, in accordance with the difficulty of the terrain. • Q. Do we have to carry all our gear with us?

No, you only need to carry a 20 litre day pack with you whilst riding. We have a support vehicle and driver who will transfer your luggage to your next accommodation each day, and have it ready and waiting for your arrival.

The daytime and nighttime temperatures vary greatly in Spain, so you must make sure that you have plenty of layers of breathable clothing to ensure that you are always warm enough and can remove a layer if you get too hot, and you should bring a down jacket for the evenings. You should also bring cycling shorts/trousers, gloves, padded undershorts, flip-flops, specific shoes for cycling, sun cream, insect spray, and Advil or Ibuprofen. Read the full kit list to find out what you need to pack for your mountain bike tour Spain.

  • Q. Can I bring a drone with me?

Unfortunately not. We are working hard to provide each and every customer who rides with us an unparalleled mountain bike experience in every destination we ride. This takes years of experience, riding and planning to get right, and a drone adds a very real danger to the group’s riding experience and health & safety.
