When choosing where to ride in Canada, we decided to aim high and went straight to the west coast, and neighbouring states of British Columbia and the Yukon Territory. Although they are ‘next-door neighbours’, to drive between their main cities of Vancouver and Whitehorse takes more than a day. Such is the epic scale of this country.
British Columbia is well-known as the home of mountain biking in Canada, and riding there is a dream for most avid mountain bikers. But there’s so much more to this region than Whistler Bike Park and, indeed, mountain biking in general. There’s a rich cultural heritage of First Nation communities, a spectacular coastline, and lush temperate rainforest.
The Yukon, by contrast, is a vast wilderness of boreal forest, lakes, mountains and wildlife. Grizzly bears, caribou, moose, eagles… there are so many opportunities to spot the local wildlife in their natural habitat, as you ride pristine Yukon singletrack. At the right time of year, you may also be lucky enough to spot the Northern Lights!
