E-MTB tour in Tuscany Itinerary

This e-mountain bike tour in Italy will immerse you in the rich culture, cuisine and landscapes of Tuscany. From the man-made singletrack around the hilltop town of Massa Marittima, to the burnt orange island trails of Elba, and rolling olive groves of the coastal inland.

+Arrival in Italy - refresh + prepare for your adventure

If you’re travelling a long way or across time zones to Italy, we advise arriving a day or two early to allow your body to adjust to local time and to make sure any flight or luggage delays don’t spoil your trip.

We will be happy to recommend a pre-trip hotel at Rome Fiumicino airport.

+Day 1 - Welcome to Tuscany! warm-up ride

Your guide will meet you at your airport hotel in the morning and transfer you to your beautiful home-from-home in Tuscany. Your accommodation is a renovated 18th-century farmhouse in the grounds of an olive grove, complete with its own private pool and bike room.

When we arrive we’ll have a delicious lunch of Tuscan favourites where your guide will go through the all-important pre-trip briefing, answer any questions and lay out all of the highlights of your week under the Tuscan sun.

Suitably fed, we’ll head to the local bike shop to get everyone fitted on their e-mountain bikes and start our warm-up ride on Tuscan trails from there. Our ride will take around 2 hours and will give you the opportunity to get tuned into your bikes, warm up your legs after travel and to get acclimatised to the trail style and environment.

This evening’s dinner will be a feast of delicious local food and wine in one of our guides’ favourite restaurants in the old town of Massa Marittima. Salute a tutti!

Distance cycled: app. 15km (app. 2 hours)
Accommodation: Charming agriturismo, Massa Marittima
Meals included: Lunch

+Day 2 - Local trail heaven - Monte Arsenti

After a typical Tuscan breakfast we will start our first big day of riding directly from our accommodation. Our destination today is Monte Arsenti, and the astounding network of fantastic singletrack trails that have been built on this mountain by your local guide team.

These trails are just perfect for E-MTBs and your guide will craft the perfect day for you on these trails, showing you the best lines and combination of trails, so that you get the most fun out of your ride and time on each side of the hill.

After a few trails we’ll stop to have a special kind of lunch on trail at the ‘meeting hut’ buried deep in the forest. Your support guide will have kindly prepared this for you before you arrive, with some great music playing and the smell of coffee hanging in the air, it is Italy after all.

After lunch we will slowly winch our way back up to the top and the viewpoint overlooking your accommodation and the valley that reaches all the way to the coast.

What goes up must come down, and as we reach the valley bottom on our way back to our agriturismo we’ll stop at Massa Marittima for a leisurely walk around the town and an aperitivo.

We’ll have time to freshen up at the lodge before heading back to Massa for another delicious meal in a local Osteria.

Distance cycled: app. 30km (app. 4 hours)
Accommodation: Charming agriturismo, Massa Marittima
Meals included: B, L

+Day 3 - Lago dell'Accesa - hidden history + wine tasting

Now that we’re fully settled into Tuscan life and have had a good taste of the riding here, we’re going to venture a bit further into the interior of the region and take on a full-day adventure ride, steeped in history, to Lago dell’Accesa Archaeological Park.

The area around Accesa Lake has been excavated, periodically, since the 1980s, and remnants of ancient settlements, tombs and metallurgical activity have been found. It’s also said that the lake submerged a whole town.

After a morning of tremendous riding we’ll stop for lunch at a gorgeous agriturismo and sample their produce to re-fuel for the remainder of our ride.

We’ll end the day in true Tuscan style at a small winery where we will get to taste a selection of their wines, accompanied by some delicious local bites, over-looking the vineyards and cypress trees. Our shuttle will be ready and waiting to take us back to our home-from-home when we’ve had enough!

Dinner this evening will be a more chilled affair at a local pizzeria, where you can eat as much or as little as you want.

Distance cycled: app. 40km (app. 5 hours)
Accommodation: Charming agriturismo, Massa Marittima
Meals included: Breakfast

+Day 4 - Piombino - coastal singletrack + medieval forts

After our big pedalling day yesterday we have a bit of an easier start, and can enjoy that second coffee under the breakfast canopy before we set off with a 30-minute shuttle to the town of Piombino.

Once here we’ll ride on two different hillsides, stopping at the centuries-old hamlet of Populonia for a delicious lunch in the middle. Populonia is a pretty medieval ‘borgo’ sitting within a 15th-century fortress, built to defend the town from Barbary pirates. The view from the top is spectacular!

Your riding today is on a warren of singletrack trails that criss-cross these hills hugging the cliffs of this rugged coastline. Ever-present in the distance is the impressive Elba Island, your destination tomorrow.

You will be joined today by a local guide to this region, he is the architect of the trails, and he also knows the best bays to go swimming, so pack your swimming clothes!

When we get back to your accommodation you can relax as we’re having dinner here this evening, in their restaurant set amongst the olives.

Distance cycled: app. 30km (app. 4 hours)
Accommodation: Charming agriturismo, Massa Marittima
Meals included: B, D

+Day 5 - Mini-adventure Elba island

Today we start our adventure on the Island of Elba. We have a short transfer to the ferry terminal at Piombino, then we can relax and enjoy the 1-hour sail across the channel to Elba, spotting other islands in the Tuscan Archipelago, and Corsica further in the distance.

You’ll arrive in the hustle and bustle of Portoferraio, the main town of Elba, but we’ll soon leave that behind as we drive inland to the start point of our first of two island rides.

Nature and history co-habit amicably here on Elba, with ancient fortresses and more recent remnants of the mining industry peppering the mountains and bays of the island. Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled here on Elba between 1814 and 1815, when he was, briefly, sovereign of the island before escaping back to France.

We’ll be riding above Capoliveri, using our E-MTBs to follow the rugged coastline around the south of the Island, we’ll climb high above the town to reach the trails that take you through the long-forgotten mine trail networks that cross the island.

Spectacular views across turquoise waters will accompany you for most of this ride, contrasting with the deep red of the earth beneath your tyres, stopping off in hamlets that dot the landscape throughout this landscape.

As we finish off our ride at our island accommodation for the night, we can settle down to a glass of wine while watching the sun set on another perfect mountain biking day in Tuscan heaven.

Distance cycled: app. 35km (app. 5 hours)
Accommodation: Small agriturismo, Elba island
Meals included: Breakfast

+Day 6 - Arrivederci Elba + afternoon at the pool

Our Elba adventure isn’t over just yet. We’ll take on another awesome ride this morning, exploring the west part of the island and enjoying the singletrack there, with views over a secluded harbour with the odd super yacht moored up.

You’ll ride a completely different terrain from yesterday, a little bit more technical and rocky, that will take you from the high point of the Island all the way to the sea with crazy scenery that seems to go hand-in-hand with this part of the world!

We’ll have just enough time to enjoy our last island lunch before catching the ferry back to the mainland.

This afternoon is yours to spend at your leisure beside the pool, strolling through the olive groves, or enjoying a massage at the wellness centre. It’s up to you.

We’ll have dinner at another of our favourite restaurants, after our relaxing afternoon.

Distance cycled: app. 25km (app. 3 hours)
Accommodation: Charming agriturismo, Massa Marittima
Meals included: Breakfast

+Day 7 - More Monte Arsenti treats - your choice

On our last day of e-mountain biking in Tuscany we’ll take you back to the Monte Arsenti area for another chance to ride your favourite trails of earlier in the week. Back to something you know, taking the unknown out of the equation, you’ll have some plain, old good fun with your new crew of riders and friends!

Lunch will be in a typical osteria close to the trails so that, after lunch, we can head back to your Tuscan home-from-home in time to pack, remove pedals from rental bikes and freshen up before dinner, which will be a big celebration at our favourite local steak house in Massa.

This will mark the perfect end to our week of living the good life riding e-mountain bikes in Tuscany with your newly found friends and locals, but we are pretty sure this won’t be your last visit to the area… it gets into your blood!

Distance cycled: app. 30km (app. 4 hours)
Accommodation: Charming agriturismo, Massa Marittima
Meals included: Breakfast

+Day 8 - Departure

Sadly, today we must bid our farewells. We’ll pack up our belongings and transfer you back to Rome airport for your flight back to reality, but packed full of memories and flavours from this stunning part of the world.

We would ask you to book your return flight for no earlier than 14:00 on departure day.

Meals included: Breakfast

+Skill + fitness levels required

Does this sound like you? our vacation time is precious and we want to be sure that you’re making the most of it with the perfect e-mountain bike tour.

On our E-MTB tours the e-bike is not a skill or fitness compensator. It is an aid to exploring the world, riding further, or giving you that one final run down a trail that we might otherwise have missed.

During our e-mountain bike tour in Tuscany you will deliver around 75% of the effort required on an average day and your E-MTB will help you with the other 25%. You will occasionally encounter terrain or a situation where you will need to run the bike in Boost mode for short periods. Most of your ride will be spent between Eco and Trail modes, sitting in Eco mode on most climbs to manage your battery life through the day.

Please note: The skill level required reflects an overall rating for the trails on the trip but you should expect to find sections and obstacles that push your ability levels.

Skill level: Intermediate

  • You have been e-mountain biking regularly for at least two years
  • You can brake, use gears and corner with confidence
  • You have good e-bike handling skills, and are confident riding rough double track and non-technical singletrack
  • You are competent at riding undulating trails with moderate climbs and descents on both double and singletrack, but tend to get off and walk technical singletrack sections
  • You e-mountain bike approximately twice per month throughout your biking season

Fitness level: 5/7

  • You have a good level of bike fitness, exercising at least three times every week throughout the year, for an hour at a time
  • You can ride an e-mountain bike for up to six hours a day at a moderate pace, with snack and photo stops, for three or more consecutive days
  • You can tackle two or three fairly significant climbs a day, up to 600 metres each

Typical trails you’ll be riding

  • The trails on our E-MTB tour Tuscany are a mixture of man-made singletrack trails through forests and along the coastline, and natural ‘rustic’ ancient walking paths
  • Double track: undulating and sometimes steep forest tracks, made up of a mixture of hard-packed and loose surfaces, and quiet country roads
  • Singletrack: you will encounter some roots, fixed and loose rocks, and loose, sandy singletrack
  • The surface will most likely be very dry and loose
  • Trails in the forest will have roots crossing them and may be narrow through the trees

+Accommodation + food

We understand that when you’ve had a big day in the saddle in Italy, you want a warm welcome, hot shower and a comfortable place to relax and unwind – because that’s exactly what we’re looking for too.

The accommodation we use on our E-MTB tour in Tuscany is family-owned and operated. We’ve spent time researching these areas extensively to select the most comfortable and authentic accommodation in the region, and we have carefully planned the itinerary around these.

You will spend six nights in a beautiful Tuscan ‘agriturismo’, surrounded by olive groves and complete with its own private pool. There is also a wellness centre, indoor swimming pool, and two restaurants on the estate. Please note: the ‘home-from-home’ style of the agriturismo means that you may be sharing a bathroom with one other guest, depending on the number of people in the group.

You’ll also spend one night in a small agriturismo on the Island of Elba.

Another highlight of our Italian adventure is the abundance of exceptional local food and drink you’ll enjoy in every town and village along the way. Tuscany is famous for its exceptional local food and wine, and you will be spoiled by an abundance of delicious home-cooked dishes, in a variety of different restaurants and ‘osterie’.

+Health + safety

There are no specific vaccinations or anti-viral medication required for travelling to Italy.

It is wise to carry basic medicines such as paracetamol or aspirin for fever and pain and Pepto-Bismol for stomach upset.

You should always consult your own doctor or physician before travelling to new countries to seek their advice on matters concerning your health abroad.

Your health and safety is on tour our top priority so when you travel with us you also have the peace of mind knowing that you will be covered by Global Rescue emergency medical and evacuation services.

+Currency + foreign exchange

The currency in Italy is the Euro. Most international credit cards will be accepted in main towns, but for meal expenses etc. in smaller towns and villages it is advisable to carry cash.

TIPPING

It is not compulsory to tip in Italy, however if you have had a fantastic experience on your E-MTB tour in Tuscany with us, we suggest a tip of 5% of the cost of your tour should be paid to your guide at the end of the trip, which will then be divided between all drivers, support staff and fixers.

+Travel insurance

You are required as a condition of booking to be insured against medical and personal accident risks. In this policy you must include cover for e-mountain biking and we advise that you take out a policy which covers trip cancellation and baggage loss/damage.

We work closely with WorldNomads who specialise in adventure travel, and you can arrange your insurance cover directly with them.

Please note: Our e-mountain bike tour in Tuscany is a living thing, being influenced by multiple factors such as changing weather conditions, group riding abilities, trail damage, to name a few.
