E-MTB tour in Croatia Itinerary

Our E-MTB tour in Croatia will immerse you in the laid-back way of life in this lesser-known corner of the Mediterranean. Riding your e-mountain bike through wooded singletrack and on the rocky moonscape of the Istrian coastline, followed by a relaxing massage at your hotel, will reinvigorate your body, mind and soul!

+ARRIVAL IN ZAGREB - REFRESH + PREPARE FOR YOUR ADVENTURE

We advise arriving into Zagreb, Croatia a day or two before the start of your Croatian e-mountain bike adventure to allow your body to adjust to local time and to make sure any flight or luggage delays don’t spoil your trip.

+DAY 1 - TRAVEL TO ISTRIA - RIDE PARENZANA TRAIL
Your guide will meet you at Glavni Kolodvor train station in Zagreb at 9am, then you’ll make the 3 hour transfer through beautiful scenery to your first stop of the tour of the Istrian peninsula.

We will arrive in Buje, a small town that has its own charming brewery, where we’ll grab a bite to eat, build and fit e-bikes, then your guide will take you through the all-important pre-trip briefing.

We’ll then start our Istrian e-mountain bike adventure on the famous Parenzana trail, which used to be a 123km-long narrow gauge rail road between Trieste and Parenzo (Porec). It is now a biking and hiking trail, and we’ll ride the most scenic section of it to the town of Grožnjan.

You’ll pedal through farmland and olive groves, with the aroma of trailside herbs and flowers filling your senses as you pass. It’s not all gentle doubletrack, however, and after an hour or so we’ll join some technical, fast, singletrack trails through the forest near Grožnjan that will take us all the way down to Mirna valley.

We’ll then rejoin the Parenzana trail for the final push that will deliver us at the foot of Motovun, and our breath-taking hilltop accommodation. Motovun is one of many medieval fortified villages, perched high on the hilltops around Istria. With a population of little more than 500, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

We need to cycle all the way to the top of Motovun, where only the church tower overlooks our 17th century hotel. The views are absolutely worth the effort! If we have time, you can enjoy a swim in the hotel pool before dinner on the terrace.

Distance cycled: 35km (app. 3 hours)
Accommodation: Small hotel in Motovun
Meals included: Welcome dinner

+DAY 2 - BUZET TO HUM - TRUFFLE TRAILS

After a hearty breakfast, including scrambled eggs with truffles, we’ll ride towards the town of Buzet, considered the Istrian truffle capital.

We will ride through the forests of the Mirna valley, a world-renowned truffle area, with beautiful views of the surrounding hilltops. We will descend to the outskirts of Buzet before picking up a rocky singletrack, with a few short, challenging climbs that will take us to the medieval town of Hum – officially the smallest town in the world. We can stop off for a coffee or sip of Biska in one of the small villages on the way.

Riding into the old town of Hum, you’ll be forgiven for expecting to see knights in full armour, brandishing swords and shields; it really is that kind of place!

We’ll stop for lunch in the only (but very good) restaurant in Hum, then descend to the valley floor and follow the aromatic smells of thyme, wild garlic and rosemary as we head back towards Motovun.

Today’s trails are hugely diverse: from rocky singletrack through the forest, to fast double track descents and riverside singletrack at the bottom of a beautiful gorge.

After freshening up and enjoying a relaxing massage in the hotel spa, we’ll test our cookery skills with a pasta-making class. This is a traditional dish of Istria called ‘Frkanci’ and you will visit the mill where they produce the flour, learn how to make the dough, and then finish by making your own pasta.

Your cooking class will continue on the hotel terrace where we will share another delicious meal ‘al fresco’.

Distance cycled: 30km (app. 4 hours)
Accommodation: Small hotel in Motovun
Meals included: Breakfast

+DAY 3 - MULTI-DESCENT DAY AROUND GROŽNJAN

With strong Italian history, Istria is like the Croatian Tuscany. As far as the eye can see there are rolling hills dotted with vineyards and olive groves, with hilltop fortresses keeping watch over these valuable crops.

Today we’ll use one of these historically-rich towns as our base for enjoying a day of multiple fun descents.

The hilltop town of Grožnjan dates back to the early 12th century, and is the only town in Croatia to have an ethnic Italian majority. It is known as a village of artists, and with the smell of coffee in the calm, warm air, it is a place you’ll want to spend a lot of time in.

We will be riding a selection of singletrack descents that peel off from the town, dropping you to the valley floor with ever-increasing smiles. We’ll be passing through the town a few times today and have lunch here, so if you feel like resting and taking in the atmosphere, you can opt to sit out a run or two and sip on a cappuccino whilst looking over the vineyards instead.

After we finish today’s riding, we’ll leave this inland region and head to the turquoise coast and our accommodation in the beautiful town of Bale.

Again, you’ll have the option to ease aching muscles in the hotel spa, or have a wander round the village before dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Distance cycled: up to 25km (app. 5 hours)
Accommodation: Small hotel in Bale
Meals included: Breakfast, dinner

+Day 4 - Exploring the alleyways of Rovinj

From your accommodation today, we will ride our e-mountain bikes through rural life in this dry, coastal region of Istria, through vineyards and olive groves all the way to the Adriatic sea. A mixture of trails, gravel and double track roads through the olive tree fields and vineyards will offer an easy and enjoyable day ride.

We’ll arrive in Rovinj and explore this well-preserved medieval town, which is a smaller, less crowded version of Dubrovnik. We will ride up to the church above town, explore the narrow streets and sit down to lunch, then stroll around with a gelato. You will have time to explore Rovinj, its galleries and food markets on your own this afternoon.

On our return ride from Rovinj to Bale, we will pedal through the cool coastal forests of native holm oak and cypress trees, dive in for a swim along the coast and visit an ancient quarry where the stone came from to build Venice!

As we arrive back at our hotel we will feel that our legs have been used today, but also happy to have had some downtime to get under the skin of Istrian culture.

Distance cycled: 40km (app. 4 hours)
Accommodation: Small hotel Bale
Meals included: Breakfast

+Day 5 - SOAKING UP THE VIEWS ON KRK ISLAND

This morning we’ll leave Bale, heading eastward to the island of Krk. After a couple of hours we’ll arrive at Krk island, one of 1180 Croatian islands. Krk is one of the Kvarner islands and offers a totally different landscape from the inland forests and the coastal trails we have ridden so far in Croatia.

We’ll settle into our beachfront accommodation and have lunch looking over the bay, ready for our first island ride.

You also have the option of having the afternoon off to explore Krk, or just lie on the beach reading a book and re-charge your batteries, ready for the last two days riding on Croatian islands.

We’ll pedal towards the second highest mountain on the island, through magnificent olive groves, and start climbing to the summit on rocky singletrack to survey the archipelago that surrounds us; each island separated by glistening turquoise waters in the warm afternoon light.

As we push off from the top we’ll enjoy a selection of flowing and, at times, very rocky trails that weave their way through one-meter-high drystone walls that protect the crops from the wind and any hungry animals.

As we blast out of the downhill trail, we peel onto a singletrack that sees us hug the coastline for 10 kilometres, past secluded bays and harbours filled with fishing boats as well as pleasure boats.

If time allows we will drop in on some local ham and cheese producers, taste, chat, and take a bit of time to relax and absorb life on the islands, as they have a different perception of time here.

We’ll ride back to our beachfront hotel and get freshened up for dinner, and to watch the sun set over the Adriatic.

Distance cycled: 30km (app. 4 hours)
Accommodation: Hotel on Krk Island
Meals included: Breakfast

+DAY 6 - COASTAL RIDING ON THE 'HAPPY ISLAND'

It’s an early start today as we’re leaving Krk behind for the day and heading by ferry to Rab Island, known as the ‘Happy Island’. The ferry will take around one and a half hours, and we’ll have breakfast on deck, soaking up the views along with the morning sunlight.

Upon arrival at Rab we will swing by the island bakery to grab lunch for our backpacks, before setting off on a coastal trail that takes in the northern part of the island, weaving in and out of secluded bays, with some of the only sandy beaches in Croatia.

As we start the return leg of our loop we’ll stop off at a little-known beach, your guide’s favourite, to dive in for a swim then stretch out on the sand to soak up some sun as we wait for the ferry to come back to collect us. We’ll head up on deck, grab a coffee and sail off back to Krk island in the fading summer sunlight.

Distance cycled: 25km (app. 3 hours)
Accommodation: Hotel on Krk Island
Meals included: Breakfast

+DAY 7 - KRK ISLAND - 'MOONLAND' TRAIL FINALE

To round off an incredible mountain-to-island exploration of Croatia we have saved one of the best for the last.

Today we’ll be e-biking the ‘Moonland Trail’, for reasons that will become obvious. We’ll start the ride from Baška bay where we will take on a long ascent. The climb is gradual, with the trail running though the shade of pine trees and offering spectacular panoramas of surrounding islands.

Once we reach the plateau you’ll feel like you’ve just arrived on the moon, with bleached-white limestone rocks strewn in every direction. Before pushing on to ride the length of the plateau, we’ll take a 10-minute detour on foot to a truly breathtaking view over to the mainland and the surrounding islands. The perfect time for pictures and a snack stop.

We’ll continue along the plateau, criss-crossed by hundreds of drystone walls built to mark land and keep animals in, but also out of necessity; it’s the simplest and most sensible place to put all of these rocks! We catch a panoramic view all the way to the mainland and Velebit National Park, which is punctuated by a number of islands scattered around the deep blue sea.

As we crest the saddle we’ll be rewarded by a long, winding singletrack descent that feels never ending. As we weave the bike in between large rock walls, we’ll stop to inspect the make up of the rock and find it is stuffed full of fossils, indicating that this area was once the sea floor.

The ride finishes with a sedate riverside trail that delivers us with ease to the seaside town of Baška, where we will sit on the beach front taking in the view and sampling the local seafood dishes, before heading back to pack up for our return journey home tomorrow.

Tonight we will drive to a special secluded farmstead to enjoy a final celebratory dinner of a classic slow cooked meat and local homemade brandies, cheeses and prosciutto.

Distance cycled: 30km (app. 4 hours)
Accommodation: Hotel on Krk Island
Meals included: Breakfast, farewell dinner

+Skill + fitness levels required

Does this sound like you? Your vacation time is precious and we want to be sure that you’re making the most of it with the perfect e-mountain bike tour.

On our E-MTB tours the e-bike is not a skill or fitness compensator. It is an aid to exploring the world, riding further, or giving you that one final run down a trail that we might otherwise have missed.

During our e-mountain bike tour in Croatia you will deliver around 75% of the effort required on an average day and your E-MTB will help you with the other 25%. You will occasionally encounter terrain or a situation where you will need to run the bike in Boost mode for short periods. Most of your ride will be spent between Eco and Trail modes, with a keen eye on your battery life required through the day.

Please note: The skill level required reflects an overall rating for the trails on the trip but you should expect to find sections and obstacles that push your ability levels.

SKILL LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE

  • You have been e-mountain biking regularly for at least two years
  • You can brake, use gears and corner with confidence
  • You have good e-bike handling skills, and are confident riding rough double track and non-technical singletrack
  • You are competent at riding undulating trails with moderate climbs and descents on both double and singletrack, but tend to get off and walk technical singletrack sections
  • You e-mountain bike approximately twice per month throughout your biking season

FITNESS LEVEL: 4/7

  • You have a reasonable level of mountain bike fitness, exercising at least twice a week for one hour or more, throughout the whole year
  • You can ride an e-mountain bike for up to five hours per day at a moderate pace, with snack and photo stops, for three consecutive days
  • You are capable of tackling one or two moderate mountain bike climbs per day, of up to 400 metres each

TYPICAL TRAILS YOU’LL BE RIDING

  • Double track: undulating forest and coastal tracks made up of hard-packed dirt, gravel, and rocks of varying sizes – some loose, some embedded
  • Singletrack: rooty singletrack through pine forests; open, flowing singletrack across plateaux and on the coast; rocky, rough singletrack climbs and descents
  • The trails in Istria are largely old hiking paths, with some purpose-built mountain bike trails. The trails are mostly dry, sometimes loose

'Super-nice' Croatia

The H+I Croatia e-mtb experience has changed the way we yearn to vacation. No other experience allows you to do what you love every day, in a group of great people, while seeing the best of a country - off the beaten path. From end-to-end, the experience was flawless. From Victoria's exceptional care and communication, to Daniel's astonishing guiding skills we were in awe at every step. From the dining, to the accommodations, to dodging emerging weather systems, to the trail choices it was amazing. We were inspired, physically challenged and always left the day thinking "could it get better?" and it did! We were able to put our brains in neutral, and just live in the moment.

Many of our mountain biking friends asked us "Why e-bike?" We could cover more ground, in less time, with less difficulty and then enjoy more descents. We spent less time in vans, and more time in the saddle. The fleet of e-bikes were new, lightweight cycles with high end components that met all performance expectations. We could focus on levelling up our technical skills and enjoy km #1 as much as km #65, then retire to our boutique accommodation and still have energy for a fun dinner and sunset!

We are superfans of H+I and plan on touring again. We feel like members of a really cool family and can't wait for a reunion.

What a wonderful adventure with H+I. Everything was perfect. The hotels, food, guide (Daniel), and bikes. We had an epic time in Istria and along the coast. I couldn't ask for a better trip. I am looking forward to the next trip!

Loved the food, hotels, guides, trails , bikes , and especially the guides. We will be definitely using H+I and the guides again. Hoping to go again next year!

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) E-MTB tour of Croatia

  • Q. How many people will be in the group?

We only run small group e-mountain bike tours to ensure that everyone has the best experience possible, and we can take a maximum of seven riders in each group. The minimum number of people we require to run this E-MTB tour of Croatia is four.

  • Q. Is this E-MTB tour for novice bikers?

In short, no. This E-MTB tour in Croatia is designed for riders who can mountain bike on singletrack, have a history of mountain biking but require to use E-MTB’s to prolong their riding, or have been using an E-MTB for a couple of years gaining experience on a variety of trails on their E-MTB.

  • Q. What’s the age range of people who come on this holiday?

Our E-MTB tour of Croatia caters for a wide age range; typically between 30- and 65-years-old.

  • Q. What style of e-mountain bike tour is it?

This E-MTB tour of Croatia is a guided e-mountain bike vacation, ideal for intermediate e-mountain bikers. The terrain you’ll be riding on consists of double track and singletrack through inland forests and plateaux, and coastal and island trails which are very rocky in places.

  • Q. How far will we be mountain biking each day?

The distances we cover each day range from 25km to 40m, in accordance with the technical difficulty and height/gain loss. Each evening your guides will chat with you about the following day’s e-mountain biking and give you an idea of the sorts of trails you can look forward to. If there’s anything you feel anxious about, your guides will be happy to discuss it with you.

  • Q. Do we have to carry all our gear with us?

No, you only need to carry a day pack with you whilst riding. We have your large kit bags transferred to your next accommodation each day, and have it ready and waiting for your arrival.

  • Q. What if I come across a section of trail I can’t ride?

Your guide will be very happy to give you some e-bike skills help during your trip to help improve your confidence and your enjoyment of your E-MTB tour of Croatia. If there is a section that you would prefer not to ride, then you can simply hop off your bike and walk. You won’t be the only one to walk certain sections and it’s not a competition in biking ability; it’s an e-mountain bike holiday!

  • Q. Who will be guiding us?

Your e-mountain bike guides are local to Croatia and experienced professionals who have a real passion for e-mountain biking and for the culture and landscape of Croatia. Your safety is their number one priority, closely followed by your enjoyment of your E-MTB tour of Croatia. They will always be on-hand to answer any questions or requests you may have throughout your trip.

  • Q. What sort of accommodation will we be staying in?

On this E-MTB tour of Croatia you will be staying in small, locally-owned accommodation, varying in look and feel as we ride our way through the green mountains, to the turquoise coastline and islands of the Adriatic. You’ll stay two nights in a beautiful medieval hilltop hotel, with wellness centre and swimming pool; two nights in a hotel in a coastal village, also with spa; and three nights in a beachfront hotel on Krk Island.

  • Q. Which meals are included in the tour price?

Breakfast is included each day. You should budget around 60€ per day for food and drink, and of course souvenirs.

  • Q. What type of e-mountain bike is best for the trip?

A good quality full suspension E-MTB with 140mm travel will be ideal for this E-MTB tour of Croatia. The terrain you will be riding is rough in places and you will feel more comfortable on a full suspension bike for the duration of the trip. To avoid punctures we recommend that you bring tubeless tyres or tyres with thicker walls and extra thick inner tubes.

  • Q. What clothes and kit should I bring?

You should bring cycling shorts, gloves, padded undershorts, waterproof jacket, flip-flops, specific shoes for cycling, sun cream, insect spray, and Advil or Ibuprofen. Read the full kit list to find out what you need to pack for your mountain bike tour Croatia.

  • Q. Can I bring a drone with me?

Unfortunately not. We are working hard to provide each and every customer who rides with us an unparalleled e-mountain bike experience in every destination we ride. This takes years of experience, riding and planning to get right, and a drone adds a very real danger to the group’s riding experience and health & safety.

  • Q. Can I take a day off from riding?

Sure, it is your e-mountain bike vacation. Just chat things through with your guiding team and they will arrange your day for you. Depending on the day you wish to take off, depends on what else is available for you to do, but they will gladly advise you.
